Upcoming hysterectomy 4/11: Pros vs cons of removing cervix?

My preop appt was rescheduled for tomorrow. Until I started looking on her I didn't even know all the options of what to keep/what to remove. I didn't know there was even an option about the cervix. Can someone explain pros/cons? help!

I would like to know too! newbie as well.

Definitely discuss this issue with your doctor. Is your cervix healthy? Is there a risk keeping it? Is there a risk removing it?

Thank you for the link. Anyone know of other links to relevant articles / research. I'm having abdominal hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries on 24th May. Surgeon says I can tell him on the day about whether to keep my cervix or not. I have fibroids and am peri-menopausal. I'm quite active sportwise, and want to get back to this quickly afterwards. I have a partner. My cervical smears have always been normal, and I've had two normal deliveries. I'm not at bothered emotionally about whether I keep it or not, but seem to be hearing and reading different stuff about pros and cons - re sex, prolapse, bleeding, and future complications.
Any advice gratefully received!
Also, do I need to buy some big knickers?!

I think this can be a very personal choice. I've had to had the LEEP procedure in the past on my cervix (so I'm going into this with not a 100% healthy cervix) so my recommendation was to go ahead and remove it. After some though, I agreed. Also, I have abnormal bleeding that is almost constant. When you leave the cervix, there is a chance you can still have a tiny bit of spotting (I don't think that always happens, and isn't a lot, but it's a consideration). I am an active person (I run marathons and half marathons as well as strength train) but I know I'll get back to that. I'm just as healthy as I can be going into this and will take the time to recover properly. Research, talk to your doctor, talk to your partner, and just make the decision that is right for you. This is an issue that truly does not have a right or wrong answer. Good luck to you!

Oh, and yes, I'd get some big old granny panties for after surgery. I went out and bought a pack of comfy ones. I'm told that I'll be glad I have them since I'll likely have some swelly belly for a bit. And make sure you have some comfy pants (yoga pants, leggings, pajama pants, whatever works for you).
