anxiety and feeling palpitations
Had Total Hysterectomy July 1, having some problems with anxiety and feeling palpitations. Is this normal? Also the expected hot flashes etc. I am anxious about taking medications. Take like 1/3 dose of ambien to help me sleep.
Just am curious if others had the same issues. Also have headaches almost constantly.

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
It sounds very normal. The first month the hot flashes where pretty bad. I started feeling a bit better into that 5th week. That seems to be when the medications they gave me in the hospital were out of my system & my ovaries woke back up. As far as anxiety, I still get times where it overwhelms me. I think it is because we were so vulnerable & since I am used to taking care of everyone else I felt defenseless. The feelings get easier to deal with each month. Hang in there. Each day will be a little better!

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
I guess since I don't have ovaries anymore, I'm wondering if it is part of the hormonal crash

Yes, that is what is sounds like. Do you know if you are going to do HRT? You might be lacking a hormone that would help you feel better.

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
I don't know if I'll do HRT yet my doc wants to talk about it at my 6 week check up. I am 51 so probably close to natural menopause anyway. That might color the decision.

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
I think the emotional stuff is normal, I know I felt really different for the first couple of months but it's gotten better for me. Palpitations would bother me, tho -- I had them when a family member died and I was super-stressed. My doc gave me something for the palpitations, v. innocuous blood pressure pill, I only had to take it a few times. You might want to talk to your doc about it. Hang in there and let us know how you do.

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
I suffer from anxiety and palps also, and been having the headaches too. I think it is hormonal, at least the headache part is, as I had some anxiety and palp issues prior to surgery. If you are having alot of palps (which I did read can be a symptom of menopause) you can ask your dr to do an EKG or somehting to make sure you dont have somehting else going on. As for me, I take Toprol XL which is a BP pill, but i take such a small dose (1/2) of the smallest dose 2ce a day, it isn't for high Bp I take it because i have MVP (mitral valve prolapse, and POTS both can also give you palps) I also take xanax when my anxiety gets over the top. Its not somehting to do long term, but to get me thru this recovery and higher stress period,it does help. Also with the hot flashes starting, I may concider taking Effexor which may also help the anxiety too. Somehting I am chewing on longer term- you may want to ask your dr as well. Our hormones must be going hay wire , especially without ovaries. although I had been experiencing hormonal surges and drops prior to surgery. With the PCOS doc said it was like a light bulb before it burns out, you know how they sometimes get extra bright right before the go ? Well my ovaries were producing too much of one hormone, not enough of the other at different times. I have been having moodswings, facial hair, heightened libido , cyclical acne, ect before surgery. I could have been starting perimenopause....
hormones do many things to us. Overall I have to say i feel a little calmer post surgery. I am trying to stay positive long term...everything takes time to adjust, our bodies have been thru alot recently. you take care!

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
Had my hyst. (radical hyst) same day you had yours. Have no ovaries anymore. The day after my surgery, when still in the hospital, I had hot flashes all day long! During a heatwave....
I have also anxiety-attacks (mostly at night), palpitations, hot flashes and nightsweating. I am blaming this on the hormonal rollercoaster I am in.
I am using homeopathic medicine at this moment and this seems to make it all more bearable.
I am 48, I was already having hot flashes and nightsweating before surgery, so I am doubting if I should take HRT. I am used to approach my healtproblems by handling it without medicine or with homeopathic stuff. I use breathing techniques I learned in yoga class for the anxiety attacks and palpitations.
I discussed whether I should take HRT with my pcp (who is antrophosofic and preferably prescribes homeopathic medicines) and with my gyn/onc. Because I have to go thru radiation, and we have no idea what that will do, I will wait a couple of weeks and then decide.
Up till now I can handle it pretty well, but have to say that if I were to go back to work it might be totally different. There have been a lot of broken nights because of the nightsweating and the palpitations.
Fortunately my sick leave will at least be untill after radiation and some weeks after that, so I do not have to worry about that now.

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
Hi there,
I felt more anxious before my surgery than now (6 days out). However, yesterday I was sort of anxious. I'm not used to not being able to take care of things around the house. I need to relax about that, my husband is doing a really good job w/ the housework.
I, too, have trouble sleeping. I'm going to talk to the about this tomorrow. Have you taken Ambien before? I never have. If your thinks it's a good idea to take a low dose, then that should be fine.
Take care, I hope that you feel better with your anxiety

Re: anxiety and feeling palpitations
I am almost 5 weeks post-op and also have been having anxiety and insomnia. "Simply Sleep" was working, but seems to have quit on me the last couple of nights. My DR has also given me a prescription for Ambien, but I have not taken it yet. The side effects scare me a bit. How has it worked for any of you? I have an appt. with my GP because my Ob/Gyn is not comfortable treating the anxiety. All of this is new to me post-hyst! I did have some anxiety pre-surgery but attributed it to the high dose birth control I was on... Anyone taking anything for the anxiety?
I have taken ATivan, but that is a short term solution. I don't like taking meds if I can help it1 prefer the natural stuff as well....
I really hope that my ovaries wake up and kick in soon! I find that I can deal with the physical side of the recovery, but this other stuff is very draining. I need to stay positive for my family- they have been great but can't see mom freak out!
Anyway, I'm glad I can vent here! Hope everyone can conquer this business! I can't say that I expected this post-surgery.... Deanna
