10 days post hysterectomy: Lack of appetite?

Hi ladies,

I'm 10 days PO today, and I still have zero appetite. I'm diabetic so I have to set alarms to remind myself to eat. And even then I eat 3 bites and feel terribly full. I've lost 15.5 pounds since surgery. (I have tons to lose, so no chance of becoming underweight).

Just wondering if this is normal? Does it get better? I like the weight loss.. but for me not eating can get scary.

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy: Lack of appetite?

I had an LAVH 12 days ago and I've noticed a huge drop in my appetite and how much I can eat at once. The other day hubby and I stopped at a local taco place that we go to all the time. Before my surgery it was nothing for me to eat 6 soft tacos (I only have meat/cheese in them). The other day I ate 4 and was so stuffed I could barely move. Before surgery I used to eat a huge bowl of cereal for breakfast (2-3 times a normal cereal bowl size). Now I can barely eat a normal cereal bowl size serving! I'm not diabetic but I am large so need to lose some weight so I'm welcoming the change. I go in for my two week checkup tomorrow so I'm going to ask my Dr about it.

It sounds normal. My own appetite took to the hills as well. I tend not to eat when I'm under the weather anyway. And I recall my surgeon saying that your reaction -- want to eat, but take three bites and you're done -- is EXTREMELY common. Just stay on top of it. It'll get behind you.

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy: Lack of appetite?

Really, really normal. Try eating smaller but more frequent snack-like meals of whatever seems appealing at the moment. Your personal list will be different, but foods that worked for me were yogurt, fresh fruit, whole grain toast with peanut butter and canned lentil soup. I might have a cup of yogurt, then a couple hours later a banana, then a couple hours later an apple, then a couple hours later a piece of toast with peanut butter. After some days of this, my body got interested in steamed veggies with grated Parmesan and then veggie omelets.

Eventually my appetite returned to its usual vigourous self. I'm betting yours will too. :-)
