bladder prolapse repair and hysterectomy surgery - is recovery longer?

Hi everyone
My surgery is August 5 and am getting a little nervous now. Has anyone else had a both a total hysterectomy and a bladder prolapse repaired at the same time. Is there a longer recovery time, will I have to come home with a catheter? What should i expect. My mind is starting to whirl with alot of questions and worries.

Hi sjones1956 -

I cannot specifically answer your questions, but I have read of recovery being longer with a bladder repair. However, these situations really vary from woman to woman. I have read posts for women coming home with a catheter because of their repairs.

Hopefully women who have had this will see this post and respond.

Re: bladder prolapse repair and hysterectomy surgery - is recovery longer?

Hello! I'm 34 and had a TVH (kept ovaries) and anterior and posterior repairs in January. My uterus was a stage three prolapse and bowels/bladder/excess tissue was prolapsed too. My doc didn't use any mesh. It was a hard surgery to deal with. Pain really wasn't horrible. I did a Tylenol/Advil combo as everything else makes me throw up lol. As long as I kept up on them I was fine. Especially the first three wks or so. Much less after that. It was a looooooonnnng road of recovery. Please don't be afraid by me saying that. If you had asked me the first few month especially I regretted the surgery. It wasn't "major" in my brain. But it is. Rest rest rest. Ice packs and heating pads are a must have. Baby yourself. The more you do the more you will swell. Around the fifth month my swelly belly was drastically down, no meds, no swollen feeling (kind of that tampon feeling but not the same as the prolapse tampon feeling). I feel freaking awesome. I'm soooo happy I had the surgery. My doctor removed excess tissue (my oldest has quite the melon haha). I feel like I did before I had kids. I don't have pain, no horrible periods, I don't have to think about my prolapse at all. I am a stay at home mom and I have learned to listen to my body. If it hurts. Stop. Seriously, it won't be until the next day you will regret it. I still don't lift anything more than say a case of water. My hubby knows if there is a load of laundry at the top or bottom of the stairs it's meant to go up or down. I am also doing a pelvic floor physio video that someone mentioned on this site "hab-it". It's on amazon. When I went for my six month check they asked me to "squeeze" to check my muscles and were amazed at how great they were. My doc told me to keep it up with the video. It will help with the prevention of another prolapse. I am being extra cautious about my lifting. I want this to be a permanent fix. I don't want to go through it again because it was very hard. But oh so worth it. Please keep in mind that this is major surgery. Everyone heals differently. But be gentle with yourself. It will help to heal quicker. Rest and lay down a lot. You will all do great!! And in the end it's so worth it. I know I'm not 100% until the one year mark. But so far. I'm so happy. Good luck ladies!! Remember it's okay to be a princess!

Re: bladder prolapse repair and hysterectomy surgery - is recovery longer?

Hi,
I had my LAVH, cysocele repair and some vaginal reconstruction work done just yesterday. I'm feeling surprisingly good and are taking minimal pain relief.
I spoke to my surgeon this afternoon who said that the repair work takes much longer to heal than the hysterectomy. He estimated about 6 weeks.

Re: bladder prolapse repair and hysterectomy surgery - is recovery longer?

Thank you for all of this information, I am scheduled for a TAH on the 14th with cystocele and rectocele repair including mesh for the bladder. I go to the hospital for my pre op and I also am starting to feel quite scared. Actually the more correct word would be terrified. It is so good to see others in the same position.

Regards
Amanda
