2 1/2 to 5 hour surgery????? r they nuts
Is it true that I might be facing a 2 and a half to 5 hour surgery. Depending what they find in there. I am going for a LAVH but was told I could be an abdominal hyster. They are taking one ovary and my cervix for sure but might have to take the second. then blood typing for a blood transfusion. They are kidding right. Just being over protective right. Thanks for listening, strega

My TVH/BSO took just over 3 1/2 hours. It really does depend on what they find. I had my lower jaw reconstructed when I was 15 and that surgery took 6 hours in the OR, 1 day in ICU and another 5 days in the hospital. My TVH, I only stayed in the hospital for 24 hours.

The blood typing is a precaution, in surgery they want to be ready for anything so they can give you the best care possible.
They've blocked off 4 hours for my daVinci surgery. Depending on what they find in there, there can be quite a bit of delicate dissection and that takes a lot of time. At least I get to sleep through it
I have to "wait and see" about my ovaries too. They're not sure how bad my endo is, if it's bad they're taking both. I won't know until I wake up.

Hi it depends alot on what they are doing it for as to how long it might take. Also if you've had any previous abdominal surgery you might have adhesions or scar tissue to dissect through. Or if you have endometriosis they want to make sure to get it all out. The blood typing is always done in case you need a blood transfusion they will be ready ( I think it's pretty rare to need one) most surgeries are 1-5 hours depeding on what they are doing. Don't worry you want them to take the time they need to do things correctly . you'll be ok, hang in there. Kirstin

Re: 2 1/2 to 5 hour surgery????? r they nuts
I was told my surgery (TAH/BSO) would be about 2 hours and guess what...it was 2 hours!!! I think mine was pretty straightforward!
The thing is, once you go under, you don't know anything anyway! So when you wake up in recovery, the surgery could have taken 5 minutes or 5 hours for all you know!
So don't fret about the length of the surgery...they will take care of you in the OR for however long it takes!!! Just make sure that the person who is waiting for you brings a book to read !!!

Re: 2 1/2 to 5 hour surgery????? r they nuts
They told me the same time frame...I think it's just because they never know what they are dealing with. Also in my case I know my doc is allowing for time to excise any endo she finds as well (I'm only a year from my last lap so she's hoping there won't be too much) So yeah, it could be a long surgery but I think that's a good sign because it means whoever is operating isn't going in "blind" ... they know they might encounter things that cause it to take longer. Does that make sense?
Good luck!

My surgery took 2 1/2 hours. They took uterus, with cervix. Left ovaries and tubes. No complications.

Re: 2 1/2 to 5 hour surgery????? r they nuts
My doctor told me "typical" hysterectomy takes about an hour. Allowed 4 hours for mine, but it only took her about 3. Like others have said, once you are asleep you won't know how long you are out anyway
Best of luck to you.
