anesthesia
i had SAH/BSO 7/18, been home 2 days. just a thought about anesthesia: i decided i was more frightened of going "under" than the actual surgery. i had a long talk with the anesthesiologist ahead of time (takes some work to figure this out) about the options. we both arrived at the same choice: epidural. (oh, i also asked the doc, & he said he was cool with that.) BUT i had a dura puncture, which gives you the dreaded "spinal headache." it's the pits. especially right when they want you up & moving. i was down and barfing the whole day after surgery. there is a "patch" for it that works 80-90 percent of the time, and i finally did it (didn't really want anybody back near my spinal column with that pesky needle) monday, & left the hospital. the anesthesiologist said he's only punctured a dura 5 times in 17 years & thousands of epidurals (pretty common for caesareans, you moms probably know). so in retrospect, i don't know whether i made a good decision or not. i have "reactive airways" & asthma, so i didn't really want tubes down my throat. also, i'd heard more people barf post-surgery with generals than "regionals," which include spinals & epidurals. i feel ok now, a little head pressure when i stand up, probably from my really low blood pressure & also still being a quart low on cerebral-spinal fluid. it gradually replenishes itself, so i'm sure i'm on the way. the prescription, by the way, for a dura puncture is COFFEE! with fluids and anti-inflammatories. i was forced to drink frappucinos!
SAH/BSO 7/18 for fibroids, bleeding, pain, anemia and finally getting fed up with the whole show.

Glad your home and feeling a little better. I didn't have my dura punctured but when I was getting my spinal taps to try to lower my CSF the dr. hit a nerve running down the column, I swear it felt like I was hit by a bolt of lightning that went right down my spine and came out the sole of my foot. Sleep is the best thing for the headache and your recovery.

anesthesia
Hi
I had the spinal. Had the same talk with the dr. about choices. He left it up to me. I have asthma and sinus problems, so decided not want to have tubes down my throat.
I was nauseated for two days after the surgery. Didn't get the head ache, thank goodness. Part of my problem was my reaction to morphine, which they gave me after surgery.
Everyone's body is different and you never know! I think I would make the same decision again if I had to again.
Take care.

spinal/epidural
Hi there -
I had a combo spinal/epidural. I had no problems at all, no headaches (had horrible headaches after birth of son when I got a spinal 22 years ago), no nausea or vomiting this time. They left the epidural in until the following day, and I am assuming they put some anti-nausea meds directly into it. I have a severe allergy to compazine (anti nausea med) and was scared to death of getting it again. But my Doc assured me all would be ok, and it was :-)
I too was more afraid of being under a general because of the nausea and my allergies which is why I opted for this type of anesthesia.

Hope that headache goes away soon!
Hi,
I just made the decision yesterday after a consult with the Anesthesiologist, to do a combination epidural/spinal for my surgery.
I'm hoping for the best and no complications. I know there could be, but I'm too terrified of general to do it that way! And I've read so many positive posts on choosing the regional.
I was wondering about something and I forgot to ask yesterday. Did they put in your catheter after you were numb with the regional?
By the way, the Anesthesiologist said I was very knowledgeable about everything that would be happening and I told him everything I knew came from this site! I don't know what I would've done with out it.

anesthesia
Sisters,
I am scheduled for 7/30 and I see the Anesthesiologist tomorrow, I am hoping for an epidural. After my last general anesthesia I had bruising and swelling of my throat following the intubation, lest anyone worry, I later found out that the biggest part of my problems was due to an allergic reaction to the demerol I was given. Since then I have been afraid to be given a general again. I think I will be more relxed with the epidrual and some happy drugs to help me relax.
I hope the Anesthesiologist gives the to the epidural idea.

anesthesia
i suspect a good deal of my nausea came from the morphine, not the epidural screw-up (the puncture). but it's hard to say! yes, they put in urinary catheter after i was fairly out of it. never had any problems with that, no pain, grateful it was there for the first day plus. if you mean the epi catheter, i think i was semi-alert for that, but don't remember anything. you are awake during surgery, but trust me, you don't feel anything or even remember anything. the Anesthesiologist said we talked; i don't remember, except a vague memory of him asking me questions here & there.
in retrospect, even with the headache issues, i think the epi and/or spinal is the way to go. spinal needle is thinner, usually the hole seals itself, but Anesthesiologist told me sometimes the spinal doesn't last long enuf for the surgery, and then they have to put you out with a general. the problem with the epidural is a bigger needle, which -- unlike the spinal -- they're trying NOT to put thru the dura (the cover on your cerebral-spinal fluid tank) but if they do, there's a bigger hole, which causes yr CSF to leak out & your brain doesn't like it!

After 2 failed epidurals (no fun as you can imagine) I chose general. I loved it! I was put under at 9 am and woke up at 11:45 am.. thinking it had only been a few minutes when actually it was almost 3 hours later.
Tubes down the throat didnt bother me.. felt a little burn whenever I swallowed something solid like food for about 3 days. No headache from it and I am a severe migraine sufferer. No nausea from the anesthetic.. however the demerol that I am allergic to made me quite nauseous because the nurse stuck me with it in spite of my objections and warnings. (not too happy with her). I was up walking and going to the bathroom with assistance by 2pm the day of surgery.
I love general! lol

I too am concerned with the anesthesia thing....... I am more afraid of and epidural/spinal than I am with general. I had a D&C a couple of years ago and the Anesthesiologist gave me "cocktails" that put me in what he referred to as "La - La Land". I am hoping this is an option for me. I am scheduled for TVH Aug. 11........Going to talk to doctor about it on Monday before surgery.
