Anyone here have hyst w/out having children?

I had an LSH/BSO - 47 years old - no children. I truly never have felt the ticking clock. My husband has four grown children, so this wasn't an emotional decision for me -- just a way to get rid of terrible cramping. I had fibroids, endo and adeno. I feel so much better.

I had a tubal ligation done about 12 years ago. At that time the doc said I had some adhesions that he snipped away (and gave me the video to prove it! ).
The same doctor did my LAVH. It took about 2 hrs, which I guess is about right. He made no mention of any adhesions this go-round. Nor did he make any comment on the size of my uterus - just a few benign fibroids and a benign polyp.
I should really get a copy of my post-surg. report... (he seems a little less likely to go into detail than he did in the past).

I had a TAH without ever having had children. I had one ectopic pregnancy at age 22 that almost killed me, but the doctors were able to save the affected tube/ovary. In retrospect I wish they had removed both at the time of ectopic as I had repeated ovarian cysts and miscarriages after that. I always wanted children and it was difficult and traumatic to accept that I would never have any biological children...however, by the time I made the decision to have the TAH, my quality of life was really sucking wind....my reproductive organs were controlling nearly every aspect of my life. I had massive migraine headaches, painful sex, mood swings, chronic fatigue and I dreaded my period as it was exceedingly painful during a good month and excruciatingly painful during bad months....my surgery was complicated, my healthcare providers were arrogant and cocky, the nursing staff on the ob/gyn floor of the hospital were hostile and downright mean at times, but I am glad to be back at home.
There are different options available to those who wish to adopt and so many kids out there that need a loving family. Alternatively, there are still many children in the world whose life you can make a difference in. I come from a family of seven children so there are tons of nieces and nephews to share the love with. Hope you find the right fit for your heart .

I got a copy of my medical records. Some hospitals charge for them. Mine did. $10 for the first page and then $1 for each page after that. So in total it cost me $26. But at least I have them. If for nothing more, than a souvenier. My drs. got surprised. Before the surgery they told me that since I never had kids and had no previous surgeries, things would go like a breeze. Well, what they didn't know is that I had endometriosis, and it was all over my organs. So when they opened me up they had to make decisions for me because I was unable to and it was a long surgery. Coming out of the anesthesia was difficult. I wanted to wake up but at the same time I could have slept forever. The drs. shouldn't have spoken so soon and said it would be a piece of cake, because when they open someone up, they never know what they are going to find. My records don't go into great detail, but at least I have them. I hope I don't have to have any future surgeries because I already have so many adhesions and scar tissue. And that's just from the endometriosis. That's not counting all the scar tissue from the surgery.

I am in my early/mid thirties, and have not had children, to the best of my knowledge, the fact that I have not had children, did not make any real difference to my hysterectomy. I had a LAVH, and though I was sore down there, I was not unbearably sore or anything... My vagina and privates, were a distant third or fourth to other issues I had, such as abdominal pain, and whatnot...

As for: Did the fact that I had not children, make it mentally harder for me to have a hysterectomy. No, not for me anyway, but I was not happy to see my body chopped up, though I was looking forward to my new life. Everyone is different, but there is always some ambiguity, I guess...

Hi...no children but it wasn't for lack of trying! Reason I found out about my fibroids was because my DH & I were trying for a few years to get pregnant and nothing was happening - 2-3 months without a period but not pregnant. So my DO and midwife sent me to a specialist for an ultrasound and low and behold I had one fibroid growing outside of my uterus that was about the size of a honeydew melon and 3-4 more inside that were apple and orange sized. I knew my body had been changing - belly sticking out more and more even though I ate less and less and thought that it was being in my 40's that was causing the physical changes. Plus I was in graduate school and wasn't concentrating on my over all health until the ultrasound. So long story short I had a TAH with a 12 inch zipper - kept my ovaries so if we ever want to try to IVF we might have viable eggs to harvest but then have to find a surrogate. At 46 not sure I want to go through all this - I'm giving myself a year to completely recover - both physically and mentally. Never thought I would not have a baby or two in my life time - my DH is so wonderful - he has been by my side and in the decsionmaking process through it all. Even though my OB/GYN said he could take the fibroids out and 60% chance I could get pregnant but the chances of my uterus rupturing and losing the baby and possibly my own life - my DH was horrified and said he'd rather not have children than to lose me too! It's been an emotionally demanding journey these last few months since family members have become pregnant or had another baby and here I am without my uterus - hard discussion to have with people to say the least.

I didn't have children either before having my LSH/BSO just 4 weeks ago. I was diagnosed with endometriosis when I was 18 - I'm 34 now. All the doctors talked about was the infertility problem, not what havoc the endo would play on my overall health. My health has been bad for so many years, that even after my husband and I got married almost 12 years ago, children weren't ever really an option. I could hardly take care of myself and my husband - bringing children into the picture wasn't fair to anybody. That is, if I could have gotten pregnant. I think I just accepted the fact that I would never be able to have children early on, so making the decision to have the hysterectomy was a no brainer. I just wanted to feel better and to have my life back. My husband felt the same way. If we want children, adoption is always an option. Sure, it would have been great to have my husband's child, but providing all of us a healthy person/wife was, and is, the first goal. Here's hoping that the hysterectomy helps with that!

I am 25 and underwent TAH by choice on Nov. 9th, 2007. I had coped as best I could with terrible cramping no matter where I was in my cycle for nearly 3 years, and I could not handle any more. I had to see 4 specialists before one agreed to help me, and no one had any idea what was wrong with me. Painkillers really didn't help, and I could hardly stand up some days. Laproscopy showed a normal pelvis, but there I was in labour-level pain for years, so something wasn't right. I am looking forward to my 6 week check and finding out what was wrong with my poor uterus. The good news is, I am pain free now!

I have been blessed through all of this with a loving boyfriend of over 3 years who supported my decision. We still have surrogacy as an option, since I kept my ovaries. For us, though, the TAH has been a Godsend. I feel better at 4 weeks post op than I have felt for years.

I had a TAH and never had children, but I don't think it was really an issue with my surgery. I had large fibroids so my uterus size was like it was 4 months pregnant. My incision line was almost the same one they would use for a Cesarean section. So, I didn't have any post op problems.

I never had kids,either. I am 44 and just had aLAVH and a gallbladder removal at the same time. I am still very bummed out about it because I'm still single and wonder if this limits my"prospects"; I mean, will guys not want to get with me because I can't give them a baby. Also, does a hyst affect your sexual performance at all?
