Hair loss due to menopause?

My operation was June 15th - Total Hysterectomy - I have some very mild hot flashes during the day and some at night, but just this past month, I started losing my hair! Not in clumps but enough so that I have noticed - Anyone else have that happen? I feel great otherwise - much better than before when I had major issues due to anemia - I eat well, exercise, and have been doing OK with sleep. I wonder what I should do about the hair loss thing - any ideas? I am not taking HRT. Thanks,

Re: Hair loss due to menopause?

I have had this happend, but it has never lasted long. My doctor said if it goes on longer than a couple of months to see a dermatologist who treats hair loss. They will run tests and such. I have never had bald spots. My hair never looked thin, it just shed more than usual.
You might try fish oil capsules and try a shampoo and conditioner by Nioxin which helped me when I had a lot of shedding.

You could also see an endocrinologist to check on your hormones and glands. Your body is still balancing what hormones are still in your body, so this could be a side effect of the surgery.

Re: Hair loss due to menopause?

I was having thinning hair & because of other issues, the Dr. told me to take zinc. That helped a lot. Our bathroom floor no longer looks like a dog has been shedding & our vacuum works better. If it causes diarrhea, cut back on dosage. I started with one a day, but now I usually take a 50mg tablet about every other day.

This is after the Dr. ruled out thyroid issues. I went to dermatologist, & all they told me was to use men's Rogaine. It's same stuff as women's, but cheaper.

Re: Hair loss due to menopause?

I "think" I remember being told that there could be minor hair loss due to the anesthesia. I remember being told it might happen a couple of months after surgery. I have been off HRT for around 9 months and haven't noticed any hair loss (I'm 54). Two to three times a year I do shed a bit more than normal. My last phase was toward the end of June. Maybe weather changes? I notice it on the shower drain, not so much during the day or pillow at night. Lasts for a couple of weeks, then I'm back to normal. My hair stylist says the average person loses 80-90 hairs a day.

I second seeing an endocrinologist to check your hormones/thyroid. One of my sons was experiencing some excessive hair shedding and went to a dermatologist and has been happy with his treatment.
