vaginal hysterectomy

Stupid question really! I am awaiting a LAVH with BSO will this mean my cervix will be removed and will i still need smears?
Any help appreciated

In a LAVH your cervix is removed. Afterwards most, not all, Drs do "vaginal vault" smears. Good luck with your surgery and recovery.

Not a stupid question at all!

The LAVH is a lap assited vaginal hysterectomy. Work is done via lap incisions--this can also allow our doctors to see and clean up any endometriosis--and the complete uterus with cervix is delivered in tact vaginally.

You will want to check with your own doctor about whether or not you need the actual vaginal vault smear. Your specific circumstances can dictate what your doctor decides. If you have had an abnormal pap in the past, your doctor may want to continue yours. I have two GYN's. One feels I need to continue having them--I am now on an every third year schedule--and one does not.

I do still have a pelvic exam every year as I have both of my ovaries. Also, even when the actual smear is not done, my GYN still does a visual exam to check the vaginal cuff, vagina itself, etc.
