Teen7, I completely understand. I wasn't certain what was going and what was staying until my pre-op and that was only because I had been on this site enough to know there were different ways to do a hyst.

In my case, I had fibroids and they could have continued to develop in the uterine tissue attached to my cervix. So it had to go. In addition my Dr felt that in my case if the cervix was left in, the tissue left in the abdomen could provide a surface for adhesions and was basically an 'attractive nuisance'.

One of my friends who had the option to keep hers said 'why keep the door if I'm getting rid of the room?'

Re: Cervix removed, why

I had never even thought of this prior to your question but you can have the uterus removed and leave the cervix. I am not sure if this is at all common probably depending on health of cervix. I guess this also goes for ovaries. If you are wondering, call your doctor and talk to the nurse. I'm sure she can answer any questions. I am a little surprised the doc didn't prepare you for the removal of everything. Mine was real specific and even had diagrams which I sort of didn't listen to or pay attention to(silly me) since I was having everything removed.

Re: Cervix removed, why

It really depends on your doctor, you and your situation. During my visits he said he would remove my uterus and cervix and leave my ovaries or as much of them as possible. I questioned why would he remove my cervix and he said A) I really didn't need it any more, B) I wouldn't need to worry about cervical cancer, C) if you keep your cervix you may still have a slight period each month. When I got my path report back after the hesterectomy it said my cervix was enlarged and had it's own issues. So I am happy to have made the decision to remove it. Sometimes it can't be helped. My mother has her cervix, but my sister doesn't. Neither have had any problems.

Your doctor seriously should have discussed this with you. It's terrible that he/she didn't.

Re: Cervix removed, why

I just wanted to add my 2 cents here. I was supposed to have a partial laproscopic hysterectomy with the removal of my uterus only.
Surgery was on 3-15-10 I woke up with a abdominal incision 7 inches long and two little holes on each side. When the DR attempted to do my Lap Hyst he found I was full of endo with my organs attached to everthing. He decided to open me up both ovaries were attached to my abdominal wall and my uterus was attached to my bowels. He removed everything EXCEPT my cervix because he said the endo had caused such severe scar tissue it would have been dangerous to try and remove it. I woke up in extreme pain and had to have all this told to me in my drug induced haze.

After rereading the abbreiviations instead of having a TAH I had a SAH and BSO lol.

Healing hugs to everyone, I know I could use one too.

Re: Cervix removed, why

I love it when they tell you all of this and you are so doped up you don't remember and then feel stupid asking the questions once you are wide awake. Hope you are feeling better. I was very lucky in that my surgery went well without any complications so I was lucky. Sending you plenty of heartfelt:hugs5:

Hi there,
I am so sorry to hear that they are talking surgery so soon. Frankly, I would be scared about it so soon too. Its been so soon for you that you still remember the pain and how rough recovery is. Bless your heart if you have to go thru that again.
Makes me wonder why they didnt take your ovaries at the time of your hyst. What is the specialists reason for saying they need removed?

You actually made me feel alot better about having this removed. I know my doctor said now since I do not have a cervix I do not need pap smears. I also wished my dr. would have been more detailed. I asked him over and over what exactly was going to be removed.
Thanks again.
I am new to this site just minutes ago and appreciate everything sisters!
Hi'
Please ask another dr. about you needing a pap smear or not.I had my uterus taking out I had a TVH and I was told I need to still go yearly for a pap test.
