Pain/spotting with first post-op sex

I had my hyst (LSH) two years ago but went back in September to have my cervix and last ovary removed. At my six week check-up my doctor said I was still healing and he advised we wait another few weeks before attempting intercourse. My spotting finally stopped about a week ago so we went ahead and had sex last night. It was so incredibly painful I can't even describe it. My husband was very gentle but still the cuff area was so painful during and afterward. And now I'm spotting again.

Is this normal? How long until the cuff area will stop being so painful? We went so long without sex before my surgery because of the amount of pain I was in, and now I'm still in pain related to the surgery!

Pain/spotting with first post-op sex

Though this doesn't surprise me, it's best to be safe and check with the doctor. Some people have had granulation tissue and stuff like that causing problems during sex, and that can be treated.

Although my doctor told me to expect *no* discomfort upon resuming sex, I thought that was pretty unrealistic. I did in fact experience some pain the first several times after surgery. It wasn't horrible pain, it was just... you know, that "ouch, slow down" type thing. It's not like that anymore but still, I'm 4 1/2 months out and we still have to warm up slower. He can't just go from zero to sixty right away or it's uncomfortable for me. So....if I were you I'd have the doctor check that cuff and make sure it's healing right.

Pain/spotting with first post-op sex

Dear Susan,

I had a TAH & BSO on 9/11 and at my 6 week check up had to be "cauterized" to seal an area in my vaginal cuff because of spotting of blood. The next week to 10 days was scary with a nasty discharge of sloughing of skin etc. , then old stiches...(I know TMI...) but in reply to your question, my doctor told me to wait another week (7 weeks post op) before resuming sex. When my DH and I attempted it the first time it was great in many ways, but a little painful, even though we were very careful... I had bright red spotting that lasted only the night... the next time, about a week later, it was still tender and I spotted again, but pinkish, the third time was a charm .... just take it easy... I figured if the spotting didn't persist and lessened each time, then that was a good thing and a sign that I was healing slowly... but healing nonetheless... Today, I feel absolutely fantastic and if not for the incision and a little numbess and thickening at the surgical site, I would not even know that I had ever had surgery. The best part is NO HORRIBLE PAINFUL HEMMORAGIC PERIODS EVER AGAIN! It was well worth the past two months! Good luck to you.. But, don't hesitate to call your doctor if you are worried. Mine certainly encouraged me to call him with ANY concerns! Merry Christmas/happy Holidays to all my hystersisters!!!
