Abnormal PAP after TOTAL hysterectomy
Hello, my name is Hope, I am new, this is my first post. I had a TOTAL hysterectomy back in 1999, (I was only 23 years old), I had MULTIPLE female issues, including pre-cancer cells. NOONE had ever told me I STILL need to have PAPS done though! Just switched to a new family Dr., she did one, came back abnormal. Got a call yesterday saying that it showed "Low Grade Squamous" and positive for HPV..she said it "indicates cancer"..I am worried SICK! My mom had stage 3 ovarian cancer at age 23..dad had cancer at age 51/passed away at age 53..grandfather..grandmother..aunts..uncles..cousins..ect.cancer is HORRIBLE on BOTH sides of my family! Sending me to a OBGYN to see what needs to be done and where to go from here. She also said it shows "Dysplasia" I have NO cervix so HOW can this be??? ANY info. would be WONDERFUL!! Thanks in advance!

Re: Abnormal PAP after TOTAL hysterectomy
Hi, Hope. I'm so sorry to hear that you've had an abnormal Pap result. I'm surprised they didn't tell you to continue to have Paps done, but that's immaterial now. I would strongly recommend that you get a referral to a gynecological oncologist, as they are the experts when cancer may be involved.
I also have a strong family history, which does increase the anxiety. I hope you are able to get some answers which will help. There are other ladies here who may be able to answer your questions better than I can, but I wish you the best possible results!

Re: Abnormal PAP after TOTAL hysterectomy
Hi Hope, when you no longer have a cervix the doctor uses the pap tool to take samples of cells from the vaginal vault and the vaginal cuff where the cervix used to be. Although it is less common, HPV can cause vaginal cells to become abnormal (dysplasia) just like cervical cells can become abnormal, which is why paps are still recommended.
You should probably talk to your doctor further before you panic, though. If your result was "low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion" that is NOT cancer. It is actually a pretty common result and can be treated fairly easily. If you have some wait time before you can get an appointment with the gyn, you could call his or her office, tell them you are anxious and would like to understand more about what the referral said and what it might mean. The person who called you may not have explained it very well.
With your family history, its no wonder this is all scary and confusing. Sending lots of comforting thoughts to you. (((hugs)))

Re: Abnormal PAP after TOTAL hysterectomy
Yes, take some deep breaths, Hope! I don't have any personal experience to share, but if you do a forum search for VAIN (vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia), I think you'll find some helpful information. I'm glad you'll be able to see the gyn next week and get more information and clarification (less time to worry!). Oh, be sure to get copies of your path reports so you'll have them for your own records.
Hang in there!
