New to all of this: post-op with endo

Hi. I am new to this forum thing so please bere with me. I just had a Laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy done on Nov. 30, 2010. I had very heavy periods with sever cramping. Back in July I had a thermal ablation of the uterus to cauterize my uterus, but that did not work. During my surgery my doctor informed me that he found endometriosos and removed most of it, but since I did not have my ovaries removed (because my doctor felt I was too young to go through menopause at 29) there was still some left. It has been almost a week and I still have some pain. I was just wondering if anyone else has went through the same surgery. If anyone can give me any clues as to what to expect, that would be great.

While I didnt have the same type of procedure you did, I did/do have endo. Endo is a tricky disease. Even with the removal of ovaries (uterus, cervix, etc), women can still experience issues with it. That is why a hysterectomy is not considered a cure for endo. Many of us continue to have issues later on down the road. This is why it is important to seek out an endometriosis specialist. These doctors are highly skilled in removing and treating endo. I only wish I had found mine sooner!

As for your pain, it might be due your still recent procedure. I have random pains off and on for a solid 6 months. While of course none of it was like my immediate post op pain, it would still come and go.

Feel free to check out our Endometriosis forum and endometriosis resources. You'll find lots of helpful information in both places.

Thanks for the info. I am going to check it all out. But for now, I guess I will just take things day by day and see how it goes. Thanks again!

Re: New to all of this: post-op with endo

Hello! I just had a TAH/LSO (RSO in '02) due to severe enod and abnormal bleeding. It has been 5 weeks today and while I feel alot better, I still have somepains/cramping. I think that is due to surgery and not necessarily from the endo. I am surprised he left your ovaries, even though endo can still come back and hyst is not a cure. I just started on Vivelle .1mg last week. I just turned 32 last week so HRT will be in my future!!
What part of TN do you live?

Hi Winky31. He left my ovaries because he said he did not want me (or my husband) to suffer though menopause at such a young age. I am hoping that it will be alright though. If not he said I may need them taken out in the future. I live in New Tazewell, TN about an hour NE of Knoxville.

Re: New to all of this: post-op with endo

Hmm, I have severe endo and have had three laps to remove it and tried just about everything (including an IUD that perforated!!!). We discussed leaving the ovaries. He said if I left them, the endo would just continue. I had done enough research to know that they needed to go. Menopause so far has been a breeze. They started me on the .025 Climara patch as soon as I came out of surgery. No issues. At my 2 week post op, my ob said that if I had not had any crying jags or hot flashes, I was past the hormonal change part. So far menopause for me has been a breeze. I don't regret getting those ovaries out. I had also ready about ovulation pain and you still ovulate. This was also a problem for me.

Re: New to all of this: post-op with endo

I agree with what everyone has already posted. I too have endo and had a SILS hysterectomy done on the 7th. I kept one ovary because of my age (25). My doctor said there was a chance on the endo returning whether or not I kept my ovary but I am on Zoladex to try to increase my chances of keeping the endo at bay. Zoladex is similar to Lupron but the side effects are less severe and I haven't had many problems with it.

I also wanted to suggest that you check out the endometriosis support portion of hyster sisters; the women on there are very knowledgable and have been through this before.

Thanks CaliRose! I will check it out. Do you have to take hormones with still having your one ovary?
