Gas pain in my shoulder

I am 6 days post op and am experiencing a lot of gas pain in my left shoulder, is there any way to ease this pain? I've been dealing with it for 3 days now, tried working my shoulder and rolling my neck, trying to work it out but wasn't sure if I was just making it worse. Doc said it has to work itself out but at this point, I'd like to help it along. I know burping ans such isn't the answer because thats not where the gas is.

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

When I had gas pains in my chest & shoulders, the nurse in the hospital had me lay flat. Maybe that will help.

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

I too am having terrible gas pain. So bad and today is post-op day 8! I am confused if it is all gas or if it is heartburn too. I have never before had these problems so I am not sure if its one or both. My diaphragm is killing me but I feel like I have a burning hole in my chest (maybe hunger). I keep walking and snacking and nothing is relieving it. I'm eating gss-x and tums like candy and have had plenty of bm's so I know things are moving along well.
I hope u and I find some relief! How long will this last?

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

Hi! I also had the gas pains. What I did to make it pass faster was to walk around in the house as much as I could. It seemed to subside the pain.

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

I am not quite 24 hours post op but I can tell you that waking and drinking water helps the pain. I haven't had quite frankly.....farted yet, but I am belching like a man with two six packs of Bud and a day off from work! LOL
The worst thing is that I can literally hear the gas in my diaphragm...don't have any to speak of in the neck or shoulder. Gas x is great. Another old fashioned remedy is baking soda and warm water.

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

Here's my guarenteed fix:
1. Be sure you are drinking literally tons of water. I'm still at 6 liters (?) a day.
2. Gas-x - wish I had that when I had my laporoscopy years ago!
3. Microwave a wet rag and put it across your tummy. Found that gem here, and it really does work (and feels soooo good).
4. MOST AMAZING - DRINK HOT COCOA! Works in minutes to get things moving. Got this tip in the middle of the night at the castle and it worked like a charm.

Good luck and I hope you find some relief soon. The gas can really be the worst part of it all sometimes!

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

Thanks to all of you, some make it sound like I need to burp or fart, at my check up on day 5, I asked my doc about the gas and it isn't in that area, burping and farting will not bring relief. He said when you stand, the gas rises, so I'm believing the laying flat thing, I don't see how gas X would work but if it works for you, great.
@ Rilling....I haven't had the chest pain and have never had heartburn, so for you, that just may be heartburn and the gas X will probably help you.
@ Ladyfuji, I didn't get the pain in my shoulder till about day 4 or 5 so I hope for you, you don't get it. Keep drinking water, I haven't had a LOT of water but after reading these post, I'm going to try that...along with the laying flat, I've been reclining.
Good luck to all of you. I'm pretty much pain free at day 6 after a robotic surgery, my only complaint is this gas pain, once it's gone I'll be fine. I'll be on my way to laying around for the next 5 weeks.

Exactly--the gas pain you are having issues with in your shoulder is not from your digestive system so any suggestions, such as Gas-X, aimed to relieve that type of gas simply won't work. Your pain is from the CO2 used to swell your abdomen for surgery and that gas is outside the intestines.

This article has some helpful information and tips about this type of gas: Gas - How to Alleviate Symptoms Caused by CO2...

It does get better so in there! I know it can be very miserable!

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

I had gas pain in my shoulder at two weeks and it was the worse pain I had ever experienced! I read here that a Sister's nurse told her to lay flat and put a pillow under her hips to elevate hips above tummy. The idea is to use gravity to get the gas to move out of the shoulder. It worked for me. It took about 15 minutes. I also have been drinking a lot of water, about a gallon a day, and walking.

Re: Gas pain in my shoulder

I had horrible gas pain in my shoulder after surgery last May which were far worse than any pain from the surgery itself. This time I was determined to do everything I could to avoid it. I drank tons of water before and after my surgery which really helped as did walking. I did not experience shoulder pain as bad as I had in the past. I was told in the castle to lay on my side if I could and to bring my knees up as far as I comfortably stand it, this and the water really helped. Good luck, I am praying for a quick end to your pain.
