does anyone know how long you have to worry about blood clots after surgery? When are we mor or less back to where we were prior to surgery in the circulation dept?

blood clots after surgery

I know that is my doc's concern since my hemoglobin dropped after surgery. I just had one week postop checkup yesterday and she did an internal to see if she could feel one in my bladder..that was NOT fun, but she said she didn't feel one so that's good news. I still have to go back again next Fri for them to check my blood again. It's come up some since the surgery, but apparently not enough.

The way I understood the blood clot thing is that once you start moving around, the circulation starts up again and then you should be ok. Just be sure to take a short walk even around the house every couple hours during the day. That should keep things moving. (I learned this 2 years ago when my DH had a DVT in is leg, it was a big scare, and now any trip we take we make many stops so he can move around.)

I have a history of blood clots so post surgery I'm on Lovenox (sp?). The key is being up and moving as much as you can stand it. Even if you're resting, you can still be wiggling your feet or even toes to keep circulation going.

I'd check with your Dr regarding the blood clot question. When I got blood clots (after a knee surgery) it was several months later. I have no genetic pre-disposition for blood clots, which I just recently found out...but joint surgery and pelvic surgery are higher risk for blood clots. Ask the Dr! If you aren't high risk (taking birth control, smoking, overweight etc) with no pre-disposition and stay active...follow Doc's orders...you should be ok! But...ask your Dr.

blood clots after surgery

I had blood clots 13 years ago from estrogen. They made it to my lungs before I went to the emergency room. The doctor didn't put me on medication after by surgery but they did give me a blood thinner shot in my stomach the day after my surgery. That didn't hurt near as bad as the IV needle. Anyway, moving around is the best thing to do.
