Princesses to your Recovery Progress Report thread and the Otherside

This is your thread for sharing with and caring for your kind sisters. Some you met in Sunday's chat. It will be as helpful as you make it. You can compare experiences, share progress, vent frustrations and just generally find understanding.

I am your SunshineSister and remember how good it felt to have my surgery over. I am here to "say you are not alone" and to share my personal experiences and the things I have learned from other sisters. I had my DvH/BSO with Rectocele & Cystocele repairs on 1/16/14 and had a slow but uncomplicated recovery. Still dealing with a few issues.

Recovery is different for everyone and there is no normal but we will have similarities to share. You know yourself, so listen to your body. Initial recovery may take 6-12 weeks and full recovery could be one year.

If you can edit your profile for surgery type it will be helpful, as some answers depend on this. Also where you are in this wide world can be fun.

So, some Sisterly advice
-Be kind to yourself and listen to YOUR BODY
-Follow your Dr's orders and heed limitations
-Accept help from family and friends
-Drink lots of water and eat healthy tummy friendly food
-Rest, rest, rest, and rest
-Walk a little each hour you are awake (to the bathroom, to get a cup of tea)

Feel free to ask questions about anything that comes up or if you just need a cyber hug --ask.

This site has some great articles, so explore. You can start with articles in the top bar. The big blue bar helps with info also including Hysterectomy Checkpoints. I really liked this. It helped me know what to expect as I progressed in my healing.

Don't forget to use the post-op forum to ask questions of sisters farther along in this recovery. They might have had a similar concern. I will definitely be letting you know when this might be a good idea.

So, as you begin your healing. Remember you have just had major surgery and you have one chance to get it right. Listen to your body and take care of you. I am here to help, so see you when you are ready to post.

You all have my prayers and good thoughts for your recovery.

Lots of gentle hugs,
Anndy

Hi everyone. I had surgery at 9 am today. Pre-op was painless, just talking to the nurses, surgeon, and anesthesiologist. They had relatively modern music playing in the rooms and we got a good laugh at "How to Save a Life" coming on. Oh, and they had me take a pregnancy test when I got changed, missing the fact my tubes were tied. So one last preg test before saying goodbye to my uterus.

Surgery took just over an hour. My uterus was definitely enlarged but we won't know more until my 2 week appointment when pathology is in.

Honestly, the pain waking up was pretty bad, and I don't remember what exactly they gave me. They knew I was very nauseated with anesthesia so I had the patch as well as 2 other nausea meds before they woke me up. Worked beautifully. A few hours later, the pain had gone down quite a bit. I was able to urinate with some help from my husband, but it felt like the pee was more falling out of me than being pushed. That was one of my biggest concerns so I'm very relieved to have it behind me.

I went home around 2, I think. I'm due for pain meds now, which I will gladly take. The pain is lower right sided, in an area without an incision, which is kind of interesting. Maybe either gas or internal stitches? Oh, and very minimal bleeding, but I did buy some "feminine wipes" from the feminine hygiene aisle that are probably my best purchase.

Finally, after making my bed perfect with new sheets, body pillow, etc. I fell asleep with the hospital ice pack on my belly. I woke up to a puddle as it leaked everywhere. Sad! Don't make the same mistake.

Sorry for the marathon update but hopefully that is encouraging to some of you still waiting. I'm new to the site but feel free to ask if you have any questions I may be able to answer.

Evening Meggie M and to your Recovery Progress Report thread,

Sounds like you did great today. Now along with taking your meds on schedule, maybe make a schedule or set a timer, make sure you walk a few minutes each time you wake. It will help get rid of any extra gas they put into your abdomen to make room to work. Also drink lots of liquids so you stay hydrated. Glad to hear you are being able to rest or sleep even if you are just napping. Your body has been through a lot. The pain is probably where some of the internal work was done.

Gentle Hugs,
Anndy

Hi everyone! I had my surgery around 2:30 pm yesterday, and stayed overnight in the hospital. I should be leaving in a few hours. So far I feel really good! I had robotic lap assisted vaginal hysterectomy. He removed uterus, cervix, both tubes and right ovary. Apparently the ovary was covered in endometriosis and stuck to my insides. I'm hoping that is the explanation for so much of my problems the last few years and that helps things out with it being gone! I am relieved the surgery is over. Pathology report should come back by Friday or early next week. I am thankful for this forum and all of the kind thoughts and advice!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 27-Jul 03,2016

Hi, everyone. I had surgery Monday at 2pm. Vaginal hysterectomy, everything except ovaries. Also had bladder sling procedure for stress incontinence. I was given a spinal and some sedation. It took a long time before I was able to feel my legs or anything below my belly button. Very little pain. Only took Tylenol at hospital but I am taking Norco now at home. I stayed overnight and came home around 3pm Tuesday. I have some muscle type pain in my belly, mostly on the right side and some pain in my upper thighs, maybe from the bladder sling? I discovered a small stitch on each side of my pelvis from that procedure when I showered last night. Anyone one else have thigh pain or stiffness? It's hard to lift my legs to put my slippers or underwear on.

Hello! Finally on the other side! I had my TAH yesterday at 8:00. All went as planned. I got to see a picture of my uterus and I am so glad that thing is out! Pain wasn't under control until the evening but things are better today. I'll be in the hospital for a couple of more days so I plan on taking it super easy.

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 27-Jul 03,2016

Hi everyone! I had my hysterectomy yesterday at 3pm. Surgery took about three hours. My uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes - all gone. They had me pretty drugged up with pain meds and an anti nausea patch. I don't remember much. I was on the gurney in pre op, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up in recovery. My first walk around the recovery area was unsteady and wobbly. I still feel a little wobbly on my feet.

After surgery, I didn't feel much pain wise. Today though, I feel really sore, like my abdomen has been in a fight and lost the battle lol. Been burping a lot.

I'm on pain meds and am using an ice pack now.

The main problem so far that I'm having post surgery urinary. I'm able to urinate, but not much comes out, and when it does, it's a trickle and it's painful and stings. I have an appointment today to get it checked out.

And I'm so tired. Spending time in bed. Getting out the bed is a challenge. I've been reading all of the tips in the Hystersisters -- that book is great.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jun 27-Jul 03,2016

Hi ladies,

I just want to say that we have taken the first step towards the rest of our lives. I had the op on Monday and the surgeon didn't know how she was going to perform it - it has ended up being abdominal with an inscision like a Caesarian due to my uterus being the size of a melon (pesky fibroids distorting it). I have to say that now, 2 days after, I am pain free for the first time in. months and only taking pracetamol. Yes, I have discomfort but nothing compared to the back pain I have had recently.

I had a bit of a tricky recovery, the morphine I had post op was effective in dealing with the pain but made me feel sick and gave me a headache. Once that was out of my system yesterday I began feeling loads better, had the catheter taken out and moved around a bit, verrry slowly! I was discharged after they took the drain out and checked the wound. I'm now at home taking it very steady but feeling remarkably positive - thank you all your support.

Things I'm glad I knew / did etc...
1. Lots of pillows
2. Roll onto your side to get out of bed.
3. Wet wipes
4. Have lots of snacks and eat little and often
5. Be realistic and don't do too much!

.
I've found that having a small step stool or a couple of toilet rolls on the floor to put your feet on when trying to urinate helps. Sitting in the 'potty' position helps the bladder empty fully so should help with the pain. Also keep drinking lots which should also help relieve the stinging.

Sorry if I haven't done the quote thing right but
