Diagnostic laparoscopy for adhesions
Two and a half weeks ago I had a diagnostic laparoscopy to check for endo in addition to suspected adeno. While she was in there, the gyno found extensive adhesions. She fixed them, and she seems to feel that they were the cause of all of my pain. My question is this: how long after the procedure does it take for the pain to go away? I have noticed that there is no more pulling or tenderness at my c-section scar, but I still have cramping type pains, back pains and pain during intercourse. Is it possible that my body is still settling from the surgery?

Re: Question about laparoscopy for adhesions
I should add: In addition to symptoms listed I also have increase urination frequency and some of the bleeding patterns that are symptomatic of adeno. The new gyno is now offering the same solutions for the bleeding as the other doc did. Hormones (which make my migraines worse), Mirena ( which caused one infection after another before it came out), and ablation which I am not too sure about. I have read quite a bit of information suggesting that ablation can actually cause more issues for someone with adeno. Oh and she suggested a prescription for meds for an overactive bladder because she said that my uterus wasn't big enough to be causing me any issues. Are there other tests I could ask for, or has anyone here experienced anything similar to this? I have tried various searches, but haven't found much information at this point that helps with my specific situation. Sorry about all the questions and everything, but I feel kind of lost at this point. Thanks for listening.

Re: Diagnostic laparoscopy for adhesions
Are your symptoms any better today? The more meticulous a surgeon is during surgery, the more pain we can have during recovery. Also, were you released for intercourse at 2 1/2 weeks? It is possible your body wasn't quite ready for the pressure and movements involved with intercourse.
I am guessing your doctor does not feel you have adenomyosis based on the size of your uterus. Generally speaking, those with adneo have an enlarged and boggy uterus. As far as more tests you could request to identify possible adeno, some doctors are able to detect it with an MRI. However, adeno is often not positively identified until after pathology after a hysterectomy. And there are women who have undergone a hysterectomy for suspected adeno and no adeno was found during pathology.
You may want to consider the meds your doctor is offering for your bladder. It is possible you have more than one issue going on and eliminating the bladder concern could help you with the other issues.
Also, since HysterSisters is a hysterectomy website, the experiences shared here with regard to ablations are not balanced responses. Those who have had successful ablations have no need to post here! You might want to visit the Endometrial Ablation Discussion Group for more balanced experiences.
If you and your doctor are not on the same page regarding your health care, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion and/or speak to your GP.
in there!

Re: Diagnostic laparoscopy for adhesions
There has been a decrease in symptoms. I still have some, but since Aunt Flo is currently visiting, I guess that is to be expected. This is my first real cycle in almost a year. I had one about three weeks ago, but that was right after the Mirena came out, so I didn't count that as normal. I had forgotten how difficult dealing with the flooding can be.
The doctor can't be judging whether or not I have adeno based on the size of my uterus. I have had several ultrasounds that put it at the size of someone approximately 14 weeks pregnant. Also, she herself noted during my physical before the lap, that my uterus was quite large considering my last pregnancy was over nine years ago. I have also had doctors in the past tell me that it feels boggy. I am hesitant to take the bladder meds because I have not had any incontinence issues. I have had an increased need to urinate, but it reminds me of being in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Re: Diagnostic laparoscopy for adhesions
I too have a nearly-normal size uterus and yet many of the same symptoms as you describe (backache, frequent urination, pain in my hips and thighs, heavy bleeding with clots, cramping all month). I was referred to a surgeon who diagnosed adeno immediately. He said that while a "boggy" uterus is a tell-tale sign, it is not absolutely necessary. He then scheduled me for a hysterectomy in 6 days. So I would pursue the adeno route a little further and don't discount it entirely just because your uterus is not overly large.

Re: Diagnostic laparoscopy for adhesions
Thanks kc0707. I sometimes feel like maybe I am a hypochondriac. The doctors keep telling me that "this" should fix it, or "that" should, without much luck. I think that having menstrual issues that have worsened over the last several years combined with a development over the past year of back and sciatica issues and an overactive bladder, in addition to the other symptoms is a little more than coincidental! I just wish I could find a doc that would seriously consider it. I did find a specialist in the directory here on the forum and he takes my insurance so I might see if my GP will refer me there as a next step.

Re: Diagnostic laparoscopy for adhesions
Keep pursuing it! I, like you, had a gradual piling on of things: first heavy bleeding (I thought wow, this sucks, but tough luck), then somehow I "hurt" my lower back (how'd that happen?) but I never related it to my uterus, then kabam! uterine cramping. Even though the ultrasound came back normal, the surgeon I saw knew right away right away even before the physical exam. You just need to find someone with a fair amount of experience with this who is going to be proactive. Don't let anybody discount your symptoms - you know when something isn't right.
