Surgery date and bad veins

I just got my TAH Date today Feb 23 and people have always had problems drawing blood from me. IV sites are the same when they get them they tend to infiltrate after 12 hrs and have to be restarted. They have gone as far as star IV's in my neck and top of feet. Any suggestions on how to Beef up my veins.

Hi,
I don't have any suggestions how to make your veins "beefier", but my DH has small veins and they always have to use the smallest needle to get his started. You may want to let your doctor know what has happened in the past and also let them know at pre-op.

Good luck on the 23rd!

Talk to your Dr. about this, he/she may want to have you get a PIC line placed before surgery. This is a like that goes into a deeper, larger vein in your upper arm and is is theaded to just above your heart. It can stay in for at least several days and will not infiltrate.

Good suggestion.Never thought of that . Took care of plenty of patients in home care with pic lines never thiught about one for me. Thanks again so maybe there is one less thing to worry about. I am a very busy mother of three boys with a husband who works 36 hrs at a time. So I am trying to make lists for kids and dh and friends (and me).

The only way that I know to make your vains easier to access is to make sure that you're really well hydrated. My vains tend to roll, so I always tell them to go after the back of my hand. Be sure to let your doc know about this, your anesthesiologist too. They may be able to keep you hydrated enough through the IV that your vains won't infiltrate

Talk to your doc...
