Cone biopsy revealed cancer. Talk to me!
I have no numbers or anything other than "Your cone showed cancer, so I could not do the hysterectomy. I am referring you to an oncologist." My GYN sent me to get a CAT scan today (had the cone yesterday), and my appt. with the oncologist is Wed. My GYN said she thinks this can be taken care of with a radical hysterectomy, but she could not proceed with the planned hysterectomy yesterday because they have to know more about my cancer first. She said I might need chemo and/or radiation.
My cervical biopsy showed moderate to severe dysplasia last week, but she took several biopsies up the cervix and into the uterus. She said the farther up the cervix she went, the milder the dysplasia was, and it was negative in the uterus. I had a lesion on the end of my cervix, and that's where the most severe cells were. This lesion was not present 6 weeks prior to the biopsies when I had my pap smear. I think she was surprised that the cone showed cancer.
What IS a radical hysterectomy? I was just coming out of the anesthesia and didn't have my senses enough to ask her questions. Hubby didn't know what questions to ask, and he was in a state of shock, too. So, given what I have just told you, what can you tell me about my condition and outlook??

Cone biopsy revealed cancer. Talk to me!
Hi,
I also had a cone done and they thought that I only had mild dysplasia but when they did the cone they found out that cancer was present. They actually called the oncolgist while I was under and he recommended a radical hysterectomy.
I cant tell you exactly what a radical hysterectomy is but I know they take more tissues surronding the female organs and they take part of your vagina. I do not know why they do a radical sometimes and take more surronding tissue and part of your vagina.
In my case I was glad they did. When they did pathology on the part of the vagina that they took it was determined that there was a small tumor less than 1 millimeter that had started there. If it would not have been for taking part of my vagina they would not have found that second spot.
I do not know specifically about your case but in my case I ended up having to have radiation because they found the second spot. I had 25 external and one 2 day internal that I was put in isolation 2 days in the hospital for. The radiation was very doable and I am a real chicken about hospitals.
There are a lot of people on this site that will be able to give you some questions that you might want to ask. The oncolgist are the experts at this. I am nearly 1 1/2 years post-op and doing great.
I wish you the best of luck and I know you will get lots of great advice from this web site.

Cone biopsy revealed cancer. Talk to me!
Hi Jan.
I know how scary it is to be told you have cancer. You have a very wise Gyn to send you to an oncologist, because they are specially trained in surgey when cancer is suspected. It does saound as your is at a very early treatable stage.
A radical hysterectomy is removal of the uterus, cervix, and surrounding tissue, the upper vagina, and usually the pelvic lymph nodes and is done when cancer is suspected. I know it sounds scary, but you will find much info and support here from those of us who have been thru it. I hope you feel better after your appt on Wednesday. Why don't you write down all your question for the Dr?

Cone biopsy revealed cancer. Talk to me!
I'm very sorry you're having to go through this. But let me tell you from my experience, it's all doable. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in December during an attempted cone biopsy. I was bleeding too much for my gyn to do anything about it, and she actually had an onc. on the phone while I was still under.
Because I was bleeding so much, they decided radiation and chemo was the best way to start treatment. I had Cisplatin, I did not lose my hair, and the anti-nausea meds they gave me worked wonders. I had six cycles of chemo (one a week), 25 external radiation treatments, and two internal radiation treatments (which involved just office visits, no hospital stays). I worked (at home) throughout my entire treatment. The worst of it was the last week and a half or so.
I had a radical hysterectomy on April 13. Others have described how "radical" differs from "total," so I won't go into that, other than to say only one of my lymph nodes was taken. I haven't gotten cleared for sex yet, so I can't say how my shortened vagina will affect my sex life. But from what I hear, it's very likely I'll be just fine after taking it slow and having a little patience <g>.
The best part -- I'm now cancer-free.
So get all your questions ready, and always keep a list of them going, because you'll always have something to wonder about. I personally think doctors pay more attention to those of us that question things and demand respect. The first day in my onc's office he was talking to both my husband and I about chemo, but it seemed (to me) he was making more eye contact with my husband. I interrupted him and said, "Are you giving *him* the chemo, or me?" He paused, then spoke to me the rest of the meeting. I think that set the tone for our relationship <g>.
Hang in there, and feel free to keep asking quesitons!!

Cone biopsy revealed cancer. Talk to me!
These ladies have already given good advice....I do feel it is a good idea to see a gyn/onc. As my gyn. told me...."I do maybe 1 radical a year, the gyn/onc. does many per week." The gyn/onc's really know their stuff. My radical included taking the uterus, cervix, part of the vagina, the fallopian tubes and ovaries and lymph nodes.
Let us know when you have appointments.....you have come to the right place for encouragement and support.
This is a difficult time right now....the more info. you have the better you will feel....remember, no question is too stupid to ask your doctor.
