Migraines

Hey ladies! I am new to this site and am desperate for help. I'll try to keep this short. I am almost 41 and I have had migraines for several years now. My doctor finally had me to start keeping a diary of when I had them and it ended up being every single time I would have my period. I have taken different medicines, tried a holistic doctor for a short time and nothing seems to help. I was having some trouble and ended up having a complete hysterectomy this past February. I was in hopes that it would take away my migraines too but I was WRONG. What can I do?? I am tired of these headaches taking away part of my life. I have missed out on so much the last several years because of them. I am on day three now of just being home in bed.
If any of you have any suggestions or have had the same thing happen to you I would appreciate any help and input. Thank you so much!

Re: Migraines

Have they tried giving you medication to prevent migraines? There are several that are used. They are taken daily as a preventive measure. That has almost eliminated my headaches. There are also Drs, usually neurologists, who are migraine specialists. Not all neurologists have an interest in migraines however, as I discovered. I would pursue preventive treatment even if you need a second opinion, and sometimes it takes trial and error to find the right one. Good luck, I know this is discouraging.

Re: Migraines

Thanks so much for replying! Yes I was on a couple different medicines but they didn't help. Do you mind me asking what you took?

Re: Migraines

Propranolol works for me. I don't recall all the other options but there are several. Mine isn't for everyone, but it's great for me. I hope another works for you. Also acupuncture works for some, I've not used it for migraines but it's a thought. I think sometimes you have to be persistent trying things because if you find the right thing, it makes such a difference. I hope you find an answer soon.

Re: Migraines

Before my hysterectomy i was on 1000mg of depakote a day to try and prevent my migraines. Which were horrible and would last for weeks on end. I had 2 months of bliss after surgery but now im on day 4 of a migraine and its begining slow me down. Hot flashes seem to make it worse and im constantly having hot flashes

Re: Migraines

I am on 1000mg of magnesium (maglucate) and 400mg of riboflavin (B2) a day. My ENT told me they are slowly realizing high magnesium dosages can really help migraines. I started my migraines at 12, I am now 42 and I did not have a single one since I began this regimen. Maybe the patch does help too, I do not tolerate hormonal imbalance either. You could ask your doctor about this (needs to be prescribed).

Thank you so much. I have been suffering since Saturday with a migraine and I'm so tired of it. I go back to the doctor Wednesday and will be sure to mention this. Thanks again!

Re: Migraines

This happened to me around your age. Went to a headache specialist/neurologist who tried many different meds. Finally went to an integrative doc who ran a proper thyroid panel that found I had Hashimotos. As soon as I started the meds for it my headaches went away. The full panel should include tsh, free t4, free t3, reverse t3 and anti-tpo and anti- thyroglobulin (the last 2 check for hashimotos.) My thyroid labs were always normal until they ran the hashis tests.

Re: Migraines

I agree the magnesium my cardiologist just gave me has already started to work wonders, I love this medication. I can only take a half dose due to it giving me an upset stomach, but I’m ready to switch to taking it in the mornings, because after taking it only after a few weeks, my joint pain is completely gone. For some reason I had pain in my fingers down to my toes after surgery, and it is also suppose to help with migraines, allergies ect… Remember though, its common to have an increase of migraines after a hysterectomy, I’m still in that window myself, and had the same issues as you. Suffering constantly this summer from extreme allergies and migraines, since surgery.. So remember to give your body time to adjust to the new changes, I know my migraines get worse whenever I would normally be ovulating or have my period so keep that in mind when it comes to migraines, and I always have it worse during the summer months due to my allergies where I’m at. But there is no harm in trying it for a few weeks to see if it helps, so far its been my favorite medication that I’ve been given since my surgery and I haven’t even seen any side effects and I have side effects to almost every medication. Good luck! Hang in there and happy healing…
