Drug advice please
Hi Ladies! How long did u take painkillers after TAH? I do not like to take any drugs. I have been told "sucking it up" is a really bad idea. Any holistic advice? Thanks!

Re: Drug advice please
I needed pain meds for a few weeks after my surgery. I don't like to taked meds either but hurting didn't make sense when there's help. As my dr told me once - you won't get a medal for for hurting.
I'd discuss it with your dr and together, you should be able to decide what will work best for you.
Best wishes.

Re: Drug advice please
I went w/out painkillers in hospital on day after surgery, and quickly realized I needed them. Dr. said not to be a hero; she and others told me that our bodies will use all energy dealing with the pain, or if on painkillers, will be able to use energy to heal.
I took them the first week on schedule, then weaned myself off during the day, using only over the counter Tylenol type stuff.
I did use one painkiller at night to help with sleep, and when I ran out, had a really bad night last night.
Since I was doing so well sleeping, I've called doc and asked for something to help with pain at night. I don't want to be
dependent on them, but walking around holding my belly most of the night does not sound like the way to heal, either.
I think we all need to listen to our bodies; I am glad this site showed me how many people in the 3rd and even 4th weeks still needed help with pain.
Take what you need when your body tells you you need it!

Re: Drug advice please
also I would check out which pain meds, some are more habit forming than others. Check with your doctor as always. The really strong addictive ones you may have problems getting refills. Don't just stop them either I am 12 days post op and I tried with no pills yesterday. it was awful and I am not here to prove anything. So I am taking them again but I am taking way smaller doses than prescribed. hopefully by the time the strong ones are finished, I can go on with over the counter paracetemol or some such in mild dosages.

Re: Drug advice please
Sucking it up is a bad idea, yes. Being in pain will only delay your healing and besides, you really don't want to feel that way, do you?
I'm not sure about holistic methods; I will tell you, however, that upon returning home, I took a total of two Tylenol, approximately 3 days apart (I had a TAH/BSO). I had been sent home with prescription meds, but I never used them; my pain level was that low, and after that second Tylenol, I didn't have to take anything else.
You may find that you don't need to take anything, however if you do, don't hesitate to do so...

Re: Drug advice please
Ditto for me. I had a supracervical abdominal (I'm small framed so when they got in there, they had to open me up.) I had the morphine shut off the night of the hyster and just used advil. (I have a bad reaction to morphine and it scares the heck out of me.)
When I went home, I used advil for about a week, but very sporadically (mostly to get to sleep at night because I would be a little uncomfortable.)
However, I would advise you to use what you need to use. Some people have great pain and there's no sense in suffering. Talk to your doctor as well. Some pain medication will relax your bowels and make it difficult to have a BM and that can hurt. You really have to guage for yourself.

Re: Drug advice please
Hello! I had a TAH on the 19th of Aug and they shut the morphine pump off the next morning. I never had any bad issues with morphine. The next four days I would take a Vicodin if I was in pain but never took more than one a day! And after 6 days I didn't need pain pills at all! Good luck!

Re: Drug advice please
For me alternating Vicodin with Ibuprofen for the first couple of days and then just using Ibuprofen during the day and Vicodin at night for a few more and then tapering off to nothing as my pain waned. Everyone is different. I wouldn't recommend tolerating the pain without help, but that's me. I'm not into suffering when there are other options.

Re: Drug advice please
I stopped taking them on my 2nd day home. If you are not in terrible pain it wont hurt anything not to take them.
