Why does it look like fleshy bits in vagina?

Hi all i'm new here and not sure on my way around this forum..Oh well here goes.Had vaginal hsyterectomy for prolapsed uterus, bladder sling and repairs on 26th April.Pain was strong 1-4 days.Have'nt needed any pain meds since.Had foley for 11 days, sooo glad when it was out.Peeing after was often but little it has improved slightly but still peeing a lot more often.Had an infection at day 5 and doc gave me antibiotics,so all good there.I finally decided to have a look down there and apart from looking more tighter i can still see fleshy bits in my vagina..I would of thought i would'nt be seeing anything in there if since i no longer have a uterus or cervix..So unsure if this is normal as i can't remember how things looked down there before the prolapse.I don't see doc till 7th June but thinking i might go see him before so he can tell me if things are ok...Best wishes to all on their recovery

Re: Why does it look like fleshy bits in vagina?

I have the same concerns as you and I'm 2 months out. I had my hand nicely slapped here and was told to stop looking...read my posts!

My doc says everything is fine, although she never really concerned after or even while I was having complications. Anyway, I am convincing myself that it is just a little bulging of the vaginal wall. I'm very unhappy with how it looks because it looks eXACTLY how it did before surgery except it looks like my urethra is lower....I thought it would look beautiful. To be honest, Maybe vaginas aren't supposed to be look beautiful

Anyway, I'm sure you will be fine once your swelling goes down. Despite my concerns of my bulging, my hubby has no complaints and feels no difference.

Take care!!!!

Re: Why does it look like fleshy bits in vagina?

Thanks for your reply Borgster, sounds like the same, urethera lower than before and yes mine looks just the same as before with bits bulging (yuk).Maybe it is just swelling and hopefully all that will go down.I'm at 3.5 weeks.I'll check with the doc but knowing him(and his warped sense of humor)he will tell me to stop stressing.Went to pee this morning and it felt like i was peeling open a tin of sardines..Owch.Maybe urine infection as i can only pee small amounts(although sometimes a lot)mornings seem to be the worse..Thanks again for your reply

Can I ask you what type of surgeon performed your surgery and did you discuss your expectations about aesthetics prior to your surgery?

Re: Why does it look like fleshy bits in vagina?

Polly1965, I had a similar surgery in January. However, I didn't have a cath. I was able to pee the day after surgery. I remember that peeing was stressful & painful the first few weeks...I also remember my vagina feeing all lumpy and extremely dry & sore. My doc put me on premarin vaginal cream about 3 months post op & it has made all the difference on how my "insides" feel. You should start to feel better each day & some days peeing is better than others. even after 5 months, sometimes I get good pressure & other times, it just wants to trickle out. hugs & healing to you!!

Lady Hopeful, had my gynaecologist perform surgery(only one in my small Aussie town)we never discussed what it would look like after, just that it was needed to be done for the prolapsed uterus.

Re: Why does it look like fleshy bits in vagina?

Hey Polly, I'm hoping your recovery continues uneventfully.

Gynecologists typically don't give a rip about aesthetics, and they aren't trained in cosmetic surgery of the vagina.

There is a subspecialty called a urogynecologist (Coincidentally, the International Urogynecology Associations annual conference just happens to be in Brisbane in September: http://www.iuga.org/).

Urogynecologists undergo a three year fellowship in female pelvic floor reconstruction. They are trained not only in the function of the female pelvic floor but in its aesthetics. These docs are the ones to go to for vaginal reconstruction.

I live in a tiny mountain town in the US and had to drive 3.5 hours each way to obtain the services of a Uro. It was a pain in the butt.

I did a lot of research on what, if any changes, I wanted to see from my surgery and was very specific with him prior to surgery.

My recovery has been much more painful and difficult than I anticipated, but I am extremely pleased with my results. I look like a young woman down there again. I am also very pleased with the level of tightness.

Urogynecologists are used to seeing patients for follow-up consults after surgeries by gynecologists. If you aren't satisfied with your results I highly recommend you seek out the services of a specialist. Insurance is more likely to cover these surgeries if they are for such things as pain with intercourse and/or loss of sexual sensation.
