No bowel prep required for my hysterectomy?

I keep hearing about people having 1-3 days of bowel prep for their surgery...my doctor prescribed nothing of the sort...just no eating or drinking after midnight the night before (which I believe is for anesthesia anyway). Should I be concerned about a full bowel?? I'm having a 5-point incision, robotic hysterectomy (with likely adhesions from a previous myomectomy), and removal of the right ovary. I forgot to ask about my cervix so I assume those (I have two) will stay put.

Re: No bowel prep required?

I have surgery in the am and I didn't have to bowel prep either I think it all depends on what the Dr is comfortable with good luck and hope this helps

Re: No bowel prep required?

Ok, it is not unusual that a doctor does not have a patient do a bowel prep. I didn't have to do one, and I had no unusual bowel issues. You should NOT do one unless your doctor told you to. As for the rest, am I understanding that you are saying you have two cervices? Whether you have one or two NEVER EVER assume that the doctor will leave or take anything. Make sure you discuss what will be done with each part of your anatomy so you know you are on the same page. If you are having a vaginal hysterectomy, then your cervix will not stay behind. I would call first thing in the morning to make sure your doctor knows your preference, if you have one.

Re: No bowel prep required?

My surg is on 3/19 and as of 3/18 midnight I will be on a 24-hour clear fluids only diet -- no pulp, dairy, added sugar or sweetener or anything else. That's the extent of my prep for my laparoscopic vaginally assisted total hysterectomy (keeping ovaries).

Re: No bowel prep required?

I did not have to do a bowel prep to prepare for my surgery. In fact my dr told me NO enemas or anything of the sort. Follow the exact instructions given by your dr and the hospital.

Re: No bowel prep required for my hysterectomy?

No bowel prep here either. My doctor crossed that section off of the pre-op paperwork.

Re: No bowel prep required for my hysterectomy?

Jealous!!! I have a super strict bowel prep. I better at least lose a little weight

Day before: light breakfast like cereal/toast

Chic noodle or light soup for lunch

Clear liquids (broth, jello, juice, Popsicles, 7up, etc) from noon the day before until 6am.

Nothing after 6am (surgery at 1:45pm)

2 bottles of mag citrate beginning at 3pm ending at 6pm
