UAE uterine artery embolization? Has anyone had success with this? I

I have one fibriod about the size of a grapefruit I'm told; and some smaller ones and some polyps. The grapefruit is causing me problems. I feel I need to get this taken care of but via the least evasive means. Thinking the UAE and removing the polyps at the same time as I have read they can become cancerous up the road? I just found this site today.... Very grateful that I did.
Thank you in advance for any feedback

Re: UAE uterine artery embolization? Has anyone had success with this? I

I had a subserous fibroid that grew rapidly over a few months and we watched and waited but I was told by my female gyn that I should have a full hyst. Made no sense to me after I researched so I consulted two other gyn's, one of which suggested I either do a lap procedure and retain my cervix and ovaries or he would refer me to an interventional radiologist to see if I were a candidate for UFE. After an MRI with contrast it was determined that I was. I waited and it grew more. When it was over 8 cm I caved and did the UFE. I am quite happy I did. This was fall of 2009. My fibroid has now started to calcify but last ultrasound indicated it was around 6 cm. That may not sound like a lot of shrinkage but in my case it relieved the immediate symptoms I was having and stopped it in its tracks so I did not have to have a hyst. I never had a round tummy even with the fibroid at its largest but it was shoving and squishing things around. My bladder on the MRI pre was SO tiny. 6 mos. later it actually looked somewhat normal again. As far as the polyps? On my cervix... I've had a couple removed in office and it was not painful. They tested benign.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I have two more second opinions to get this Monday and having this additional info will be helpful.

Re: UAE uterine artery embolization? Has anyone had success with this? I

Hi

What do you want to achieve with UAE? To reduce the size? UAE is known for not very effective for reducing the size but I gave my last try before hyst (and I still haven't had done hyst yet) and it didn't work.

My UAE was in Mar 2012, I took my first MRI on 3 months after in June and found the size unchanged. My tummy is about 24 - 28 weeks pregnancy size and some info says it MIGHT work for the size as big as 20 weeks so I guess mine was a gambling with little chance of hope.

Yours being only (sorry but for me it's small!) grapefruit size I think there are good chances that it might shrink.

But now... after mine failed I am regretting why I didn't go for hyst in Mar then at least now I had a flat stomach.....

I am depending on the government hospital for the surgeries so the nearest schedule I can have for the hyst (if I decide I want to) will be nearly a year after.... I don't know if I can put up with carrying this huge tummy any longer.......

So...... I don't know, if you are still not there yet maybe you can give it a try on UAE. Just don't put up your hope so high. I guess, maybe having had done UAE then hyst could be better for me anyway because I didn't want to have had done hyst with UAE and learn UAE had worked on some people for reducing the huge fibroid at my size, I might regret not having it.....

So....... either way, I think it is best to try best and all the possibility...... if, you're the kid of the person similar to me...

Cheers,
H
