What to do?

I'm scared and not sure what to do. I know I need to have a hysterectomy for my health and general well being. But the doctor I am scheduled with is over an hour away and I am starting to get more and more worried about this fact. Do I really want to be driven there for my surgery, stay the night (away from my kids for the first time ever) and then be driven an hour home??

Yes, I chose this doctor because he is supposed to be "the best" when it comes to pelvic pain and endometriosis. But I am wondering if I should try getting a second opinion, closer to home? Before I got in to see this doc I called around to several doctors in my local area and NONE of them would agree to do a hysterectomy AND remove all of my endometriosis at the same time. I have already had three surgeries and I want this one to be my last. Hence the reason to seek a specialist.

Or am I just being paranoid? I really don't know what to do.

Re: What to do?

Sounds like you've done your homework on finding Drs. Most likely you'd spend the night away from your kids no matter where you had the surgery. An hour is fairly short in the whole scheme of things, if this is the best Dr. Probably all kinds of things will come up as you wait---but this sounds like a good Dr for you, and you've spent time looking. Good lucK, try to work on the next part of the plan---ride, who will be with kids, home care, and it will be less stressful to have a plan.

Re: What to do?

An hour is not that far. Even if you went somewhere closer with someone that doesn't have a reputation of being the best you would still probably only be 45 minutes closer. It will be okay. Don't use the hour as a determining factor in your decision.

Re: What to do?

Getting the most qualified dr would be number 1 in my book. Sounds like you've already found him!!

Just make sure you have a pillow in the car to put between you and the seatbelt for your trip home.

Good luck with your surgery. Soon it will be all over and you'll be home tucked in nice and cozy. Before you know it, your recovery will be completed and you'll feel like a million bucks!!

Re: What to do?

I know how you feel. I had a surgery 5 yrs. ago at a hospital 3 hours away. I did it because he was the best in this region, and I am so thankful I did. I was worried about the ride home also. It was not nearly as bad as I had worried that it would be. Do what is best for your health. See you on the other side.
