So many questions.....

Hello everyone. My name is Tonya and I'm new to this wonderful site. :confuse:

Last week I was informed by my GYN that I should have a hyster due to fibroids, heavy bleeding and numerous cysts on my ovaries. In addition, I have pain in my right lower abdomen that radiates down my right leg (Has anyone else felt this type of pain?) . I had a CT Abdomen/Pelvis and it showed some fluid in the "Douglas Pouch", and an enlarged uterus. Today, I'm having a pelvic ultrasound to determine the size of the fibroids.

My questions are:

How long is the recovery period and a Hyser?
What is the average timeframe for returning to work?
How long is the average hospital stay?

I'll ask my GYN these questions on Monday, but I wanted to get some idea's directly from pateints. I also plan to research having a Tummy Tuck at the same time. Will that procedure increase the recovery phase by 2-4 weeks as well?

I'm sorry for being so long winded here. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

Tonya

Nip n tuck

Lucky you! Getting both done at the same time! I did manage to pursuade my doc to do something about the 'overhang' from the old C-section. She did a scar revision to pull my tummy down tighter. Still waiting for the swelling to go down so I can see if it worked.

She told me my recovery time would be 6-8 weeks, but that I could start doing stuff as I felt ready and able without hurting. You don't actually completely heal until 6 mo to a year though.

I didn't have itching when my internal stitches disolved, but I would feel a 'ping' when one let loose. It was disconcerting to say the least.

Good luck with your surgery.

So many questions.....

Time frames for recovery depend heavily on what type of hyst you have. Also everyone is different and with different threasholds for pain, some may still suffer when you feel fine. For me the pain only lasted a couple of weeks, after that it was more of an ache but I didn't need painkillers or anything like that.

Returning to work also depends on the type of job you do, I was given 12 weeks off as I worked in a retail outlet and was on my feet doing some heavy lifting, but if i had an office job I would have been back sooner.

My hospital stay was 4 days but only because i demanded to come home a day early, it is usually down to each hospital's discretion and your progress. Personally I cannot sleep in hospitals (never could even when i had my babies) and so was making myself sick as I was not getting the sleep i needed to recoup. They decided I would be more comfortable at home.

I don't really know anything about the tummy tuck, although I would imagine if they were being done at the same time it would not add time onto the end but be incorporated with the hyst recovery time. Just my opinion.

Good luck, but it is a good idea to talk this all through with your Dr. as everywhere has different policies in dealing with this.

Welcome Tonya

I had a TAH (There is a pull down menu for abbreviations that is helpful) which is abdominal. The incision is the same as a C-section, but from what I've read on here, the tummy tuck cut is longer. I was in the hospital (castle) 2 1/2 days, used very little pain meds and felt fine in no time. At 2 week check up, dr. said I could drive and I've been going ever since. I'm now 3 1/2 weeks post-op and do MOST everything. I don't lift, vacuum or mop yet. I'm going to "milk" those as long as possible! lol
Most dr.s say around 6 weeks for returning to work. I'm a homeschool mom, so my "work" lives with me! If you do a physical job, I'd take all the time you can. There are ALOT of stiches inside that take a long time to completely heal.
This is a great site to ask questions and get lots of info.
God Bless,
Kim

So many questions.....

Hi and welcome!

As mentioned in previous posts, length of hospital stays and recovery varies based on your procedure, overall health, etc.

I had a TAH, with a large vertical incision. I was in the hospital 3 nights, which I think is pretty typical. I'm not sure if your additional procedure affects hospital stay time or not.

Initial recovery is usually 6-8 weeks off work. I went back to work at 5 weeks, (office job), but probably should have waited another week or so. Each afternoon, I was VERY sore, swollen and exhausted!

Complete recovery can take anywhere from 4 months to a year. It took me about 5 months to be able to do everything I could do before my surgery, without any pain or fatigue.

Here are some tips that may make your recovery a little easier:

Once you're at home, you'll need to have some comfortable clothes to wear. I found men's pajamas very comfortable, because the large, drawstring waists came up well above my incision, and the button-up tops didn't have to go over my head (hard to get my arms up). You will probably want to have large, "granny-panties" in a size or two large than you normally wear (you will be swollen and sore!).

Have a tummy pillow handy at all times! This would be a small pillow that you hold against your abdomen when you have to sneeze or cough. Keep it where you can grab it with only a second’s notice! I had a sneeze sneak up on me once when I couldn’t grab my pillow – ouch! It felt like my insides exploded.

Have plenty of no-preparation foods on hand, like fruit, soup, cereal, snack bars, etc. I had absolutely no appetite for a couple of weeks, and my frantic husband finally convinced me to drink some Ensure, which went down ok. You may want to have some of that in the fridge for times you just don’t feel like eating, but need nourishment.

Also, buy PLENTY of juice! You will need to drink LOTS of liquids when you get home to help with the gas. I got bored with the same type of juice, so my husband bought lots of different types, and put them in small containers for me (I found it difficult to lift and pour large containers for awhile). Don't drink anything carbonated, and don't use a straw (makes the gas worse).

WALKING is very helpful with the gas! Walk as often as is comfortable (my walks were VERY short and slow, but I did several a day), and it should really help get your bowels working smoothly again.

I also found a shower chair very helpful. Standing up long enough to shower wore me out! You could also use any plastic chair that will fit in your shower.

VERY IMPORTANT: have anything you might need at waist-level. This includes toilet paper, pads, clothing, cups, food, plates, etc. Believe me, you will NOT want to bend or reach for anything! The house may look cluttered for awhile with everything sitting out on counter tops, but it's worth it!

If you’re going to be alone, make sure the phone is where you can reach it at ALL times! Several of us have gotten “stuck” (couldn’t get off the couch without help, problems in the bathroom, etc.), and have needed to call for assistance. I kept a tiny cell phone in my pocket all the time. That way, I could even call my home number from inside my house if I needed my husband and he couldn’t hear me!

Also, it may be helpful to have some cash on hand. If you have to ask a friend/neighbor to run to the store to buy some milk, for example, it’s easier if you have some cash to hand them!

Once you’re feeling a bit better, you might start getting a bit bored. Unfortunately, you will be very limited in what you will be able to do. These are some things I did to pass the time, along with some suggestions from other hystersisters:

Reading LOTS of books
Writing long letters to friends and family (real letters, not e-mail!)
Organizing photo albums
Drew out plans for the garden
Bought a tape to improve Spanish skills
Watching lots of movies
Crafts, quilting, etc.
HYSTERSISTERS site!

Good luck, and keep posting any and all questions!

So many questions.....

Hi I just wanted to comment on the leg pain. I had that in both legs and my dr. said it was due to the amount of blood I was losing from my heavy bleeding. My TVH/BSO is Monday 3-18 so my waiting is almost over. The support I have gotten from all the sisters here has been so helpful in helping me get prepared for my visit to the hospital. Keep visiting ,ask questions , follow your doctors orders and you will make it. I plan on returning with wonderful reports to all the LIW . Best Wishes to you.
