Sex 4 weeks after vaginal hysterectomy

I wanted to find out when it would be safe to resume sex after my hysterectomy. Here's what I've found out.
I had a vaginal hysterectomy removing only my uterus on Feb 6th 2015, I went for my post-op on week three. Before my surgery my doctor told me complete pelvic rest for 8 weeks. At my 3 week appt I asked her to perform a pelvic exam because I expected to resume having sex before 8 weeks but wanted to make sure there were no problems internally. After the exam, which didn't hurt at all, I was given the go-ahead to resume sexual intercourse at week 4.
I would suggest that if ur gonna have sex be honest with your doctor so they can make sure your healing properly and are physically ready.

Re: Sex 4 weeks after hysterectomy

I still would not have sex at 4 weeks.

Honesty is great and all, but if your Dr did not warn you against having sex early, he or she is not a great practitioner.

Re: Sex 4 weeks after hysterectomy

I'm sorry, I am reading this as "I'm going to have sex anyway so you may as well let me do it."

My recovery is way too important for me to tell the doctor what I should be able to do.

Re: Sex 4 weeks after hysterectomy

((noneneeded)) 4 weeks is pretty early to resume sex after a hysterectomy. Your body is still in the healing process. The two main reasons doctors say "nothing in the vagina" is to 1) guard against infection and 2) to guard against tearing the cuff. Please be cautious even though you have the "green light".

Re: Sex 4 weeks after hysterectomy

At 3 weeks post-op tomorrow, I can't imagine starting as early as next week. I have no doubts I'll be waiting a week or two even after I'm cleared. Vaginal cuff tearing is something I really want to avoid! There are women on here who wait 11 weeks and still tear, so I can't imagine anyone being fully healed and ready for intercourse before 6-8 weeks. I hope all goes well for you, though.

Re: Sex 4 weeks after hysterectomy

This post was my way of saying maintain an open dialogue with the doctor that performed your surgery.
Everyone heals at a different rate and I wanted to hear from my trained healthcare provider
what would be best for me.
The standard answer seemed to be anywhere between 4-12 weeks. That's a huge variation
and originally I was told 8 weeks. My doctor
and I spoke about cuff tears, and infections, and all the scary setbacks I've been reading on these boards.
After an exam I was told that my body was at
a healing stage where I could safely resume intercourse.
Again, everyone heals at different rates. It is inevitable that some of us will be ready sooner than others. I'm not telling anyone to have sex at week 4, just that it is possible and if you're wondering if you can your doctor would be the best person to tell you.

You're reading it wrong. I'm not telling my doctor what I'm going to do. I'm having an honest dialogue about abstaining and where I am in my healing process. What we all seem to receive is a standard answer. My doctor took the time to physically examine me and let me know what's medically best in my case. That
was her professional medical advice which is
comforting after reading post that vary from woman to woman.

((((noneneeded)))) You were wise to check with your doctor before resuming intimacy and I'm glad she found that you are healing well.
