Decision Time

Well, back from the visit. I liked the gyn, my hubby didn't. So he definately wants me to find a different surgeon if I have the hysterectomy. But he did say the choice was mine...

The gyn thought my doctor had already gone over the ultrasound results so he started with a "flippant" (my hubby's term) about my you do have a big uterus don't you. I thought it was funny but hubby didn't.

The Doc is recommending a TAH taking the cervix as well since one of the fibroids is impinging on it and there were a lot of nabothian cysts. The DR thinks the ovaries are fine and should remain.

The Doc said that he could also do an adominal myomectomy. But it would be a complex one because of the size and placement of the fibroids.

The Doc said laprascopy or vaginal not possible with the size of my uterus and never having kids. [During my pelvic exam he had to go searching for a smaller speculum than they had in the room.]

Currently I am leaning toward the TAH. I am 42 and we are not planning to have any kids.

So my q is how large can a fibroid be for laprascopic surgery?

My three main ones were:

8.3 x 9.6 x 9.9 cm
3.9 x 3.9 x 3.4 cm
3.7 x 3.8 x 4.3 cm

He also did not recommend UAE for me. So I will talk to someone who does those and see if they think I am a canidate for that.

Thanks

Ok, looking at my path report, 'multiple myomas measuring up to 9.0 x 7.5 cm (in endometrial cavity).

Those are the only dimensions I see, and it looks like there were too many to count. I remember the U/S counted 3 distinct fibroids, but the path report doesn't. (I had a TAH w/vertical 6" incision)

And IMO, what your Doc said sounds pretty normal and I wouldn't consider it out of line. I'd be much more interested in his qualifications and if I felt comfortable with him, overall.

I think joano had more broids than I did. According to what I was told, it's not the size of the fibroid but the size of the uterus. Often the size is compared to gestation. My uterus was equal to a 12 -14 week pregnancy. I was beyond the limit of a safe lap. After surgery my uterus weighed in at 900 grams and should have been 60 grams for my age. It was over one pound. I had 4 fibroids and one polyp. Still able to have a horizontal cut where as joano had to had the verticle.

I do not regret my surgery at all.
Best wishes,
Maralyn
