Hysterectomy tomorrow 8/15; does no eating after midnight include water?
We can't eat or drink anything after midnight. Can we at least have ice or water. Or strictly no drinking?:

Re: Pre-surgery
I think the answer is no. When they say nothing, they usually mean nothing.

Re: Pre-surgery
Each doc and hospital is different. I think to make it easier for them they just say no drinking or eating after midnight even if it is water, so that way the instructions apply to everyone including if you have your surgery later in the day. Because they insert a breathing tube under general anesthesia they want to make sure your stomach is empty.
If you have your surgery later in the day, you should ask your doctor or hospital at your pre-op whether this rule still applies.

Hysterectomy tomorrow 8/15; does no eating after midnight include water?
Hi Lady. I think it depends on what time your surgery is. Mine is late morning and I was told the only thing I can have after midnight is water, diet Sprite, and sugar free jello. After 7 am only a sip of water with my meds.
Good luck tomorrow!

Re: Pre-surgery
If you were told no drinking after midnight, that means no drinking anything *including water* after midnight.
I was told no eating or drinking after midnight. I'm on a couple of meds that I take daily in the morning, so I asked if I could take those. I was told yes, I could take my meds and have a sip of water to get them down. In other words, I could *only* have that one sip of water.
My surgery was at noon the next day.
Make sure to get lots of fluids before midnight so that you don't get dehydrated.

Re: Pre-surgery
For me, it was literally nothing. It worked out fine, because I'm usually in bed around 10pm, and we left for the hospital at 6:30am, with surgery at 8:30am. After leaving the house, there was really no time to think about it. Various medical staff asked me whether I'd had anything to eat or drink that morning.

Re: Pre-surgery
Nothing to eat or drink after midnight means nothing, not even water or ice chips. It's very important to follow your doctor's pre-op instructions to the letter. Otherwise you run the risk of having your surgery cancelled. This also means no chewing gum. My mom once had a procedure cancelled because she thought she could chew gum! Good luck!

Re: Pre-hysterectomy; does no eating after midnight include water?
I was told nothing, no water, ice, candy or gum. The preop nurse suggested having a snack and a good drink of water right up to midnight. 😄

Thank you all, I did confirm. And was told nothing at all. Oh well, I will hydrate well before midnight.
