Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
I am also very overweight and I had a DaVinci procedure and I had a relatively easy recovery and returned to work in about 3 weeks. There is less chance of infection (per my doctor). I think it is very important to find a doctor you trust and that they feel confident. Also they will do preop studies, (EKG, chest x-ray and blood work). I hope all goes well for you and I think some nervousness is to be expected prior to a surgical procedure. Peace

Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
My surgeon told me if I was only 100lbs overweight it would be no problem! But I'm much more than that. He said half of his patients are between 50-100 lbs overweight and it's no problem for him. Quite a few women in my family are about 100lbs overweight and they've also had hysterectomies. Doctors made a huge deal of it beforehand but they had no complications.
Peppermint, you're such a source of inspiration for me! I'm probably about 320-330 right now and scheduled for surgery Feb 23rd. I'm always so relieved to hear of stories of woman over 300lbs that have hysterectomies and no serious complications. I actually wouldn't be scared at all if I was only a 100lbs overweight lol! I was really healthy then!

Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
Jagk, I went through surgery at a little over 400lbs 6 months ago. I did VERY well, no complications. I had hernia repair and appendectomy. I've heard that fluffy girls actually fare better than thin after surgery. Not sure how true it is but it's nice to think there may be an upside being fluffy and having surgery lol.

Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
OMG I hate hearing these stories....SAY NO to TAH!!!!! There are so many good doctors offering laparoscopic hysterectomy Not sure how to find them all but the good guys using the da vinci robot to do laparoscopic can be found on there website. They all say weight is not a problem at all. One doc told me the bigger the better. Its w w w . davincihysterectomy*com they have a way to find doctors on the website.

Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
I'm a fluffy sister too +140 extra on me but my doctor doesn't have a problem with my size. I've worked hard to take off almost 90 pounds and hope to lose a little more before I go in. I'm getting a TAH because every GYN I've been to has had problems even getting to my cervix. Exams are almost impossible to do.
There was a great thread on aftercare for the insision site a few weeks ago. Ways too keep us fluffy sisters from having complications.

Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
I was ooriginally scheduled for a TLH but once they went in the mess they found required otherwise. I'm about 150 lbs overweight.
I suspect that your small town Dr. wants to put you in the hands of a hystetectomy pro with extra high-tech equipment. Let them! You want a hyster-monster of a surgeon, effortlessly taking on any obstacle in his or her path. ((Think King Kong, only with more finesse.)
For all my fluffiness, my procedure went well (TAH -- TLH was intended, but they found too much funk, and my smart hyster-monster knew what to do) -- had surgery on Thursday, came home on Saturday, feeling better every day. YOU CAN DO IT, TOO!
I'll be thinking of you.

Re: overweight and may have a hyterectomy
I didnt have to have a hyster after all. I had a dc first and my tests all came back normal. But when I went for my checkup after dc dr told me that I turned blue on the table and had to be given breathing treatment and took a long time to wake up. It happened when they were taking out the tubes down your throat. So now she wont even do another dc if I need it. I will have to go to a bigger hospital in pittsburgh. Hopefuly I wont have anymore problems.
