Brittle Nails after hysterectomy

So it has been six months since my hysterectomy, I have been super patient with the healing process, being tired, etc. I have a question for all of you out there, please help - my nails never broke this much before my hysterectomy. I take care of my nails, use a nail hardener, but yet they don't grow. They just keep breaking. So is anyone experiencing brittle nails that just keep breaking?!

Thanks!!

Re: Brittle Nails

Did you keep your ovaries? Hormonal fluctuations are one possible cause that comes to mind.

Also, get your thyroid function tested. It's a simple blood test.

Yes, I did keep my ovaries. I have read several things about thyroid. I'll keep that in mind. Is that something my OB can send me for?! I don't love my PCP. THANKS!!

Depends on how your healthcare system works. I'm in Canada, and my gyn would not be able to order a test for me that wasn't related to a gynecological issue. But your system may be different. No harm asking. :-)

My hair is good. No changes seen. There are thyroid issues in my family...

I will ask for a visit and get him to order a blood test for me. Thanks again.

Mine, too. I've been on Synthroid since my early 40s. Good news: it works, it's cheap, you take your pill once a day and forget about it. I have an annual blood test to see if my dosage needs to be adjusted, which it does every few years.

I have the breaking nails too. The gp did every test she knows to do and nothing showed up, so I now carry a file everywhere.

Do you like jello? It's known for strengthening nails. Seriously.
