Has anyone had a laprascopic supracervical hysterectomy? I saw a doc who said that she does this procedure; however, it is a very detailed type of hys. and I have only confirmed for sure one doc who does it in Florida (and he isn't on my insurance). I saw another doc for a second opinion - she won't do a hys. but wants me to have a uterine fibroid embolization and take Lupron. (I have not had a Lap. done; we are going on symptoms of years of heavy periods lasting about 9 days with clots, bad cramps, severe pelvic pain the past month - suggested endometriosis and adenomyosis). Any suggestions?

Hi Lori, I had an LSH a year ago and it took me 3 dr's to find one. But he was awesome. He actually teaches other dr's how to do this procedure. I think you might want to get a little more info before you make a decision. You can always get a lap procedure where they just "look" around. My dr did that and gave me pictures afterward that showed me EXACTLY what was going on in there. No doubts whatsoever. I am very happy with the results of my LSH and kinda wish I had done this sooner.

I hope I helped a little.

Thanks Shera -
I have had two laps/d&c's done (1988, 1990). Don't want to 'only look' as I need some relief. I am all for doing a lap and then depending on the 'view' taking it from there. But as you know, the LSH incisions are different than the exploratory lap. I just want to make sure that the doc actually knows what they are doing.

Lori,
Yes, do make sure your Dr. knows how to do the LSH. Not everyone will do them, nor should they. I had mine done 4 days ago. It is a wonderful procedure if you are a good candidate for it. I had surgery at 7:30Am was home by 12:55PM (yes 5 hours later!). I know that is not typical but I really had to pee when I woke up so that sped the whole thing along. The word out in the OR (my DH works in the OR) Was it takes my Dr. about 45min-1 hour to do the LSH. I was in about 1 1/2 hours as they found a little more wrong they they suspected. I don't have the pathology report back, but mine was for suspected adenomyosis. You can do the ablations etc.( which I tried)but from what I could find they don't really take care of adeno because it is just to deep in the tissue to totally ablate. Keep searching for a Dr. that will do the best for you. It may not be LSH, but whatever they are skilled at and feel is right for your situation. Good luck in your search and let me know if I can be of any more help.

Hi LoriCx3 I had an LSH in Jan. and am also very pleased with the results........My surgeon (like Shera`s) teaches the procedure to other Dr.`s.........However,it took me a little while to find him.............when I asked him why more Gyn./surgeons don`t do this surgery;he replied because it takes some time to get comfortable doing this type of surgery........so if you are going the LSH route, just be sure to ask how much experience the surgeon has and what his conversion rate is(how often his lap`s become open procedure`s).........Best of luck to you as you journey to better health !!! Thank you ladies for the responses. If anyone knows of a doc in South Florida that specializes in this, please let me know. :0)

I'm having one done in 2 days from now but I did get one when I had gallbladder surgery. My doctor said it was easy and it was less evasive..of course major surgery but the healing is so much faster.

Hi Lori,

I also had a LSH. I am 2 yrs. post-op now and I could not be happier with my surgery results.

Here is a link on ~minimally invasive hysts~. Might help you find a Dr. Just enter in your state:

Also, here is a link that goes over the LSH surgery:

http://www.goodgyn.com/lsh.html

As the other ladies shared, the most important things are to have a good LSH surgeon and to be good candidate for the surgery type.

Best wishes,

Mary

Lori, I live in South Florida and I'm having an LSH on May 9th. There are only a handful of doctors in the area that perform this procedure, my doctor is one of them, and I feel very confident that he's highly skilled.
When I asked him why there are so few doctors that perform the LSH, he told me that it costs 1/5 the money that other hysterectomies cost, and that because there isn't a hospital stay, both doctors and hospitals aren't making very much money. You also need extra training. He also told me that many of the large teaching hospitals perform this hysterectomy routinely.
If you would like I can give you a few of the doctors names, including mine, if you are in the general vicinity of Coral Springs/Coconut Creek/Margate/Weston/Boca. Just let me know.
