Pre op and bowel prep questions
Im having my LAVH on Frid 24th. I have my pre op with my Dr and hospital on the 21st. Wondering what that consists of? Pelvic check? Also I know I will have to have a bowel prep. Not sure as of now if that will be an enema or the mag cit drink. However, with the drink, what time of the day should you drink it? Ive heard of some women still running to the bathroom while in the hospital getting prepped for surgery and dont want that to happen to me. All advice please!

Re: Pre op and bowel prep questions
Hello my preop was with my regular dr. It didn't take too long. She did some bloodwoek to check hemoglobin.
I had to have clear liquids the day before surgery, then 2:30 in the afternoon I drank the mag cit. For me it didn't kick in until midnight. Everyone is different in when it will kick in.
Your dr will let you know when they wouldlike you to take it.
Best of luck to you.

Thank you. I hope you are healing well! Was the waiting worse for you than having it done and on the other side now?

Re: Pre op and bowel prep questions
My Pre-op was just Bp check, weight, blood work (CBC and Type & Crossmatch). Questions and answers.
My prep instructions for day before surgery were: Eat a healthy breakfast, then clear liquid diet the rest of the day. Drink 8ozs of Mag Citrate. (Some sisters have said to chase it with some Sprite.) Dr. also suggested to drink Gatorade. Then nothing by mouth after midnight.
I've notice that each Dr. seems to have their own style about the bowel prep. You'll get detailed instructions.
My surgery is at 7:30 AM so I might decide to start fast at 9 PM. (I am so afraid of vomiting in recovery.)
Good luck to you.

Re: Pre op and bowel prep questions
My pre-op with the surgeon was really going over last-minute questions and signing forms and paying, etc. He didn't do any exam (he'd already done one when I scheduled surgery). He gave me a sheet with pre-op instructions, including how he wanted me to do the bowel prep. I did a liquid diet the day before surgery and mag citrate in the evening.
To be honest, by the time I'd done a liquid diet and mag citrate, there was nothing left in my system. I did throw up the morning of surgery, before I left home, but there was nothing to throw up. I had a raging headache/migraine and was dehydrated. Because I couldn't take anything or drink anything, I ended up puking.
My pre-op with the hospital included signing consent forms, paying, having blood tests, a nose swab, answering questions about meds and health conditions. I also did an EKG and chest X-ray, but that was due to some other factors.
My tip on the hospital pre-op is that if you take any medications or supplements (vitamins, minerals, herbal stuff) is to take the bottles with you. That way, the person interviewing can check the dose and be certain of exactly what you're taking.

Thank you Sarah.
I'll keep you posted, and I'll be thinking of you on the 24th. I am at the point now that I don't have alot of fear...I just want to be done with the surgery and onto recovery.
This is a wonderful site! So much information and support.

Pre op and bowel prep questions
I am healing well, thank you. My wait for surgery was 3 months. I had a total hysteroctomy done by da vanchi. I wanted to wait until I was done with summer school. The only way my husband would let me wait that long was to do another ultra sound and another ca125 test. My testing showed no growth in the mass and this time my bloodwork was in the normal range. The wait was long, but Aug 2 was here before I knew it. Now I'm just resting up and will be ready to go back when school starts. I hav a great husband that won't let me do a thing. Our boys are adults and have been great also.
Good luck, keep us posted.
