pre op - no carbonated beverages

My doctor's pre op instructions call for no carbonated beverages for 3 days prior to the surgery. I've never heard of that before. I also need to avoid rich and spicy food for 3 days prior. Does anybody know why carbonated beverages would be a problem?

I would listen to the Dr about the carbonated beverages. You don't need any extra gas after surgery. I would follow the same after surgery because it does a number on your bladder. Good Luck..

I've never heard of that for BEFORE surgery..however after surgery, when I got home I had a dr. pepper and boy did I have some BAD gas pains from that. I would listen to your dr. and follow their orders..all dr's are different and each have their own little quirks about surgery.

Best wishes to you.

I haven't heard of that as a pre-op instruction before but, to be honest, it sounds quite logical ... gas can be a problem following surgery and there's no point in adding to it!

Always follow any instructions you're given ... they're there for a reason!

Good luck with your surgery.

My doctor gave me the same pre-op instruction about carbonated drinks. It was also on the printed pre-op instructions that he gave me. It said no carbonated drinks for 3 days before surgery. It also said no gassy foods, like broccoli, beans and cabbage. I'm sure it must be to help prevent gas. It makes sense.

my dr told me no carbonated drinks before due to gas and no caffine 3 days prior. Since I am a caffine addict I started cutting back the day he told me of the surgery as cold turkey I get severe migraines and body aches. 14 days prior to surgery I was completely free so I would not be in the hospital craving. I still have not gone back to coffee but I had a coke from the first day I went back to work which I think contributes to my swelly belly as I was pretty flat at home.

Following your drs orders is a good idea. He/she has reasons for them and not following them exactly could cause adverse reactions. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to call your dr and ask.

Best wishes.
