Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
I only have a brief memory of this, up when I woke up from anesthesia I was shaking violently. I remember me trying to curl into a ball and the staff trying to hold me still. I could hear them saying they needed to give me something, soe kin of med and that it worked quickly. After that I remember nothing of the recovery room and just waking up in my room. Is that a side affect an should know about for the future I wonder?

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
While I didn't shake violently, after one of my surgeries I awoke to the nurses screaming at me to breathe! I was quite rattled for a bit. It is something that I mention when I had to have surgeries in the future. There is never TMI to share with your doctor and anethesologist.

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
In 1985 i had arthoscopic knee surgery n had terrible shakes when i first woke up n had it for hours. It was awful. It's from the anesthesia. I've had 4 other surgeries since then and i always tell the anesthesiologist about it before they put me under. I had it a bit in January waking up from my DNC n Lap surgery but it didn't last long. It's never been as bad as that 1985 surgery. If you ever have to have general anesthesia again be sure and tell them what happened to you. I think they can adjust it for you so it's never that bad again. Hugs

This is common. I had it myself. Demerol helps with that - usually works like magic. Some people have the shakes and some don't.

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
I've had them after surgery before (not this one though) and have seen my son have them after a few of his. Ours seemed to always be related to feeling cold and having the shivers. I never heard anyone mention a med for it though so yours may have been something different.

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
IC - I do know I have been given Demerol in the past. It definitely helped with pain but perhaps those shakes too. Thanks!

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
I also had violent shaking - to the point of teeth chattering. I also remember being told to take a deep breath. I was fighting them wanting the oxygen mask off and they told me I had to have it cuz I kept wanting to stop breathing on them. Anesthesia does weird things. But probably the best sleep I've had in 10 years! LOL

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
Very common. It has happened to me 3 out of the 10 times I have had anesthesia. They say it is related to the change in body temp, but I think mine is also anxiety related. I had it happen my first shoulder surgery, but the next 3 shoulder surgeries I knew what to expect and didn't shake. I had it for my first kidney stone lithotripsy (and the unexpected pain from the ureter stents) but the next 2 lithos I had I knew what to expect and no shaking. This was my first major gyn surgery, and I woke up shaking and didn't understand the pain or what to expect. They typically treat it with Demerol. I was overdosed with it the first time I was given it, so I always ask them to only give it to me only if I am shaking and only in very small doses if they have to give it to me. If you ever have to have surgery again, doesn't hurt to mention it.

Re: Anyone wake up from anesthesia shaking?
I dont remember shaking (except after giving birth to my son) but my husband told me how pale I was when they brought me to my room after surgery. It actually frightened him..
Maybe they keep the surgery room really cold to reduce swelling and bleeding and reduce heart rate? Possibly med responses too. Im just guessing here as Im not a doctor or nurse.
I do remember my nurse asking me in my room if I was still nauseous but I dont remember being nauseous at any point.
