Swollen Stomach

My surgery was on December 17 and I had my cervix, uterus and Fallopian tubes removed but kept my ovaries. It's been 3 1/2 weeks and my stomach is still so swollen. Is this normal and if so how long before the swelling goes down. I'm also starting to feel alot of sharp spasms so in wondering if this is part of the healing process. Last I also suffer from insomnia. Any input on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated...thanks sisters!

Re: Swollen Stomach

Hi!
Unfortunately you are suffering with something a lot of ladies experience! My tummy was swollen after my surgery for about 6 weeks, then it started to reduce enough that I didn't look an odd shape. I am 5 months out now and I still have swelling, though no one else notices I just can't get in to any of my trousers/jeans. Generally I feel really good so I just went and bought some bigger trousers and accepted I may have to deal with a bigger tummy for a while. I was told that it can take a year for all the tissue to heal internally so it's no surprise that we get a bit of swelling whilst this healing is going on. I am back jogging, pilates, zumba, so it's not stopping me do anything physical, just an annoyance really.
I also had really weird spasms and all sorts of different pains popping up through the first 6 weeks - and even now I get the odd twinge. The body seems to go in healing stages. I had a TAH so have a long bikini incision that was completely numb to start with - as the nerves have repaired new sensations cropped up and went away again. I see this as positive signs that my body is putting itself back to normal. The most persistent pain i had was under my ribcage - was very bruised when I bent over etc, but that has all gone now, though it took some time.
Insomnia I cant really help with, but a lot of people complain of it, hope someone has some good advice for you.

Re: Swollen Stomach

I'm just over 4 weeks myself and I am still pretty swollen. It is better in the morning for me, but by the evening I look like I'm smuggling a pillow under my clothes. I'm living in men's sweats and oversized hoodies because none of my own clothes are comfortable to wear yet. :-/

Re: Swollen Stomach

I'm active duty and wondering how on earth I'm going to be able to get into my uniforms after my four weeks of convalescent leave. Ugh.

Re: Swollen Stomach

Hi there,
Well, you are not alone. I am about 4 months out and it is ever so slightly going away. My stomach was so swollen, I had to buy pants 2 sizes bigger when I went back to work around 6 weeks later after surgery. I have gone down one pant size, but still not back in my normal size yet. I keep reading it takes at least 6-12 months to totally heal..

I also have the spasams, also bladder spasams, it feels like a nasty bladder infection, but I don't have one, been tested many times. Our bodies take time to heal and are doing all sorts of weird stuff. I hope you feel better, just know you are NOT alone!

PS. I also had the insomina around 3-4 weeks too, it passed quickly. I think it too is part of healing. My sense was it was my body way of balancing out... Check with your md, maybe they can give you sleep aids for a couple of days..
