28, no children, and a virgin
Hi all. I'm scheduled for a hyst on Sept 6. I was diagnosed two years ago with a Fibroid on the back side of my uterus, adeno with a uterus the size of a 10 week pregnancy, and some endo on my right ovary. I took a year's worth of Lupron which helped and I did not have the horrible side effects some people have had with it. I did have the night sweats but I could deal with those in exchange for no pain. After the Lupron, I went on a four month cycle of Yasmin, then have a period, then back on a four month cycle. I've done that for a year, but I'm having troubles again. I haven't had a period since April, but I started having breakthrough bleeding and pain. My dr was hoping it was an ovarian cyst. I wasn't that lucky. Instead, I have 3 good sized fibroids on the right side of my uterus. He gave me the option of more Lupron which scared me because there is a history of osteoporosis in my family. So I shyed away from more Lupron. He then suggested Depo. Everyone I've every known that took Depo gained weight. I'm already struggling with a weight problem as I'm about 50 lbs overweight. I can't afford any more weight. And my dr said that I could be risking bone loss there also. He then suggested that we do the surgery to remove the fibroids only. I said that if I'm going to have major surgery I only want to do it once if I can get away with it. So, we scheduled the LAVH for Sept 6.
Now to the point, my dr wants to try the LAVH first, but he's worried that since I've never had children that it could be a problem. He said that we could convert to a TAH if we had to at that time.
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard of a 28 year old with no children that has had a LAVH. As an added note, I was a virgin with my hymen intact until the first lap 2 years ago. I'm still a virgin just not with my hymen to "prove" it. LOL
As a side note, most of my family isn't really understanding about this and are very upset about my having this done....except for my wonderful older cousin who has suffered the same problems I'm having. She had her LAVH last fall and said she hasn't ever regretted it.
I also want to thank all of you for all the great information you share here. It has really helped with a lot of my fears and concerns!

Hi AthenaDreamer and
We're happy you joined the Hystersisters community! There is a ton of solid information on the site, and the members have unlimited cyber-hugs to dispense to you at every stage of your journey to good health!
I've read a number of posts from women who had a LAVH, who have never given birth. Besides other factors, I think the size of the uterus has a lot to do with the doctor's assessment of whether it can be removed vaginally, or if an incision is needed. Perhaps your doctor feels that he can get it out without having to do an abdominal procedure.
If you do indeed wind up having an incision, please try not to worry about it too much. I had one, and like thousands of others...I recovered from it just fine.
Many s and Best Wishes,

I have a friend who had to c-sections but had her hyst vaginally with absolutely no problems. However, I might add she didn't have any fibroids or anything like that. My dr. told me as long as the uterus isn't enlarged he could do it vaginally and everything went as planned. I'd say leave it up to your dr since he knows you best! I'm sorry your family isn't being very supportive. You tend to see that more often than you think and it's really too bad! Ask them if they would like to trade places with you and I'd bet they'd pass on it! I know mine would!! You need to do what's best for you! That's what I finally had to tell myself, and it was the best thing I've ever done!! Good luck to you and I hope everything goes as planned for you!

I had an LAVH/BSO at 33 years of age and I too have never had children. I didn't have fibroids though (which can be a determining factor depending on how large they are as Bizet Woman said), but had endometroisis. Though I am not a virgin, sex was always very painful for me so I rarely ever had it, maybe three or four times total in my life. I will say that I had to have an episiotomy since I was very narrow in there and the surgeon could not get the uterus out otherwise, but other than that no complications. The only other thing I might suggest if you haven't done it already is to get a second or third opinion from another surgeon as to how comfortable and skilled they would be in performing an LAVH versus TAH for your situation. Different doctors have different strategies, skill levels, and preferences.
I hope you continue to find the support and information you are looking for here! Good luck with everything!

Yes, the size of the uterus definitely will impact whether the LAVH can be done, but because you've never had children, your uterine muscles are stronger than those who have had children. I'm 43, have had no kids, and my doctor initially wanted to do a TVH. The more problems I had and the more he examined me, the more his gut told him a TAH would be what we ended up with. My uterus was pretty far up also and did not budge when he examined me. I opted to go the TAH route so that I'd know going in what I was waking up to. My uterus was twice the normal size so that with the fact of the strong uterine muscles makes me glad I knew going in what was going to happen.

I am sure someone will comment on the success of a LAVH when you haven't had children but I would like to say welcome.
I also would like to say it is very difficult when family doesn't understand. You just have to seek those that will support you and try to appreciate your family can't really 'get this' since they haven't been there.
A year ago, I never would ahve imagined the pain fibroids can cause. I never would have imagined I would even consider my surgery in a week. I even told my boss a month ago at work had someone told me they were in the situation I was in now, I would have at leats wondered in the back of my mind if they were greatly overstaing their pain.
My family and husband had a real hard time with this at first. But it was a little different as this has all happened really since Feb. My mom had fibroids but they never bothered her until she went on HRT. For me, it took telling her why I was doing this, the pain, the fact that I had lost 20 pounds because I was never hungry and yet till wore the same pant size, the running to the bathroom every 2 hours tops, and other issues (like god forbid I sneeze during the couple of days before my period or my bladder would 'leak'.
For my husband, it was watching a video of a large fibroid being removed and all the potential risks for blood loss (other course this was after saying he didn't think I should do anything that would make me less of a woman (not one of his shining moments)).
Now they both just want this behind us, as do I.

I see you are in a very difficult spot, and I am just writing to offer my support. I had a total abdominal hyst 7 weeks ago and I am doing just fine...try not to worry, trust in your doctor and you will be fine. Keeping a good thought for you, and sending cyber hugs!
Love, Ruthie

I had my LAVH 9 days ago (and feel great, btw!). I have never delivered a baby vaginally and my uterus came out just fine. I didn't have any post operative bruising or pain at all (in my vagina, that is - lol!). But, like bizet woman said, it may depend on the size of the uterus.
I'm sorry about your family's non-support. I'm sure they love you and are simply concerned about you. Sometimes love and concern (and some fear) cause people to react negatively. Like others have suggested, seek those that can offer you support - like the incredible ladies here!
I wish you the best,
Cathy

I am also 28. I have had 2 children and am having a TAH/BSO. I personally can't have it vaginally because of the amount of Endo and the Ovarian Cysts.
Welcome, and keep reading. I'm sure someone here has been in your situation. We are all diferent and all have advice, but you really need to discuss your concerns with your doctor.
As for your family, they will probably come around.
