Is something wrong with me?
I tend to panic easily and I often blow little things out of proportion. I am not sure what is wrong with me and I'm getting frustrated beyond words. Today, I am 5 days post-op, and I still have not used the bathroom to do a bowel movement. Since I have been home it gets more and more difficult to urinate. The pain seems to be getting worse, so I don't know if it's because my bowels are so full of gas and junk that it's possibly pushing on my bladder. When I first got home, and for a couple of days afterward, I would wipe after urinating and it would be clean. Now for the last couple of days when I wipe it is like a medium tinged brown goo thats coming out. I don't know why it's deciding to come out now. My mother is coming today and she's suggesting that I take a suppository, and will probably bring one with her. I am currently weening myself off Percocets, and have been eating fiber, and took a stool softener, but my abdomen hurts so bad right now and I need relief. The doctors office is closed today and I don't know what to do...
Thanks for all your help, sisters!!

Is something wrong with me?
I have little to offer as advice, although my gyne said that I might have a darkish discharge for a few weeks.
I have the same issues and concerns about pain. I am 3 days post-op and still in so much discomfort! I read the post-op sticky threads at the top of this page and feel like I am the only one who is having pain. Everyone else seems to be doing so much better than me.
So it makes me wonder if 1) there is a problem that I should call the doc about, 2) I'm just a total wimp and need to suck it up, or 3) both of the above.
So Scoresby, I am eagerly awaiting responses to your question in hopes that I will get some advice as well!

Is something wrong with me?
Hi sisters:
Sorry you hear you guys aren't feeling very well. I'm 8 weeks post op and remember the confusion of those first couple of days after the operation.
You must call your doctor; that's why they have emergency numbers posted on their phones. Who ever is oncall they will call you back. It's better to get checked by a professional than wait for things to bother you more.
BMs after surgery are no picnic but it does get better with time. Some sisters have a discharge, some don't ---everyone is different. I do know that the pain medication kept me from having a BM so I switched to over the counter pain meds after about 3 days. Then I was able to go. You must also walk. The anethesia put everything in your body to sleep and it is now trying to wake up. Hang in there and hope this information helps. ALSO, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER---VERY IMPORTANT

Is something wrong with me?
Scoresby, I came on here to post about "my" Day 5 today and saw your post - I could have written it! My hubby says it sounds like I did! LOL I am miserable today, too, and need to vent. Maybe it'll make you feel a little better to know that someone in Florida is feeling just like you do today. I have no experience with constipation so this is new to me and while trying to go yesterday, I think I hurt the stitches in my bottom that are NOT supposed to be there! I went in for a TLH/BSO and discovered after I got home that I had stitches "down there." WTH??? I called the Dr.'s office and the nurse said my uterus was so big that the surgeon had to pull it out through the bottom! They must have cut me to make more room to get it out, but NOBODY bothered to tell me!! Surprise! I am beyond annoyed and the dr. is going to get a piece of my mind next week when I go back in.
Sorry, you are having a bad day, too. You are not alone. Maybe some day we'll look back at all this and laugh about it?

Is something wrong with me?
Hi (((Scoresby180)))
It took me five days to have my first BM too. Your system is sluggish from the anesthesia along with inactivity, and the pain meds don't help the situation either. It isn't unusual for it to take this long, so try not to panic.
My dr had me taking the stool softeners all along. I didn't realize at first that they don't work like a laxative, but they keep the stool soft so it will move more easily when you are able to go. I would suggest you continue taking them for a while until everything is moving easily. You're probably experiencing gas pain. It's common too, but you really shouldn't be feeling worse. When pain increases it's a good idea to call your dr to make sure nothing else is going on.
I took something for gas like GasX and it helps to get up and move around. Walk around the house and try to move any gas that is trapped and could be causing you pain. The brown discharge is old blood. Your body is probably just cleansing itself. I had it for several weeks. You could also possibly see some fresh blood along the way as your stitches dissolve.
If the urination continues to be a problem and especially if it seems to be getting worse I think you should call your dr or the dr on call today and ask about it. You could have some swelling that might contribute to this, but it doesn't sound quite right. It's better to have it checked out, especially if you're having significant pain. You could be dealing with a bladder infection, which would also explain increased pain and difficulty with urination.
I hope you can get this taken care of today. I had to resort to Milk of Magnesia finally, after eating tons of fruit and doing everything I knew to do. It did the trick and it didn't even require a full dose. Keep us posted on your progress. I hope you'll be feeling better soon.
Rita

Is something wrong with me?
There is something wrong with you ladies - you just had MAJOR surgery!
Your bodies are recovering from that and you can expect some pain (but it should be controlable), some discharge, some issues with BM, lots of gas and maybe some issues with peeing.
BUT if you are at all worried you MUST call the Dr & check it with him. They are the experts and that is what you pay them for.
Honestly, things will get improve & you will feel so much better in a few days once the BM issue is resolved. You will need to get yourselves mobile, even if it is at snails pace, as this will help too.
Hugs
Katy

Is something wrong with me?
My nurse at the hospital gave me a suppository before going home and she also suggested that I take a stool softner for the next few days. I never had a problems with my bowels, in fact they are better then before, and I think its because my nurse was on top of it with that suppository. I also take fiber choice twice daily, and only took the stool softner for about three days.

Is something wrong with me?
Hi scoresby and puppy ma
Puppy - you made me laugh out loud. "suck it up" is my motto. I'm learning that that is not always a good thing. Do call your drs if you have any concern. I had/have post op infection and was hesistant to call thinking I was being a wimp/obsessing etc. My friend, a nurse came and checked my incision and wanted to shake me because I hadn't called the doctor.
Better to call and be sure than wait and get in more serious ka-ka (couldn't help the pun)
Good luck.
Sandra

Is something wrong with me?
Well, I finally spoke to the on call doc this afternoon. I took a suppository and gave birth to a bowel movement the size of a quarter. I immediately went to lay down, took a small nap, woke up and ate some raisin bran. Just tried a suppository this evening and went a lot more. I'm starting to feel better! Let's hope it stays this way!
