post-op infection/pain

Hi, I had a vaginal hysterectomy removing the cervix and uterus on Aug. 3rd. Four days later I was in the ER with severe pain/bleeding/discharge. My dr. had said I'd experience a couple of days of discomfort and that it would be an easy recovery, especially compared to my previous ceasarian and an ablation I had. The ER dr. said that in fact this was a more difficult procedure to recover from. I'm wondering if anyone knows how the vag. hyst. compares to those surgeries.
Because my own dr's office waited a week after my follow up call for an appt. (as instructed by the ER, I was to be seen by my primary and called to make an appointment, only to be told my fever, bleeding and smell was within normal ranges) , I now have a severe infection, but my dr. keeps telling me I shouldn't be in pain and that this procedure is very minimal compared to the others, and prescribed an antibiotic.
SO, while I have other questions about my antibiotic and recovery, I am first wondering if other women are told that this is an easier recovery than a ceasrian and to not expect difficulties, and if they an compare, or what other drs. migh

Re: post-op infection/pain

A vaginal hysterectomy should be easier to recover from than a c-section because there are no external incisions. They aren't cutting through muscles, fat, etc to get there. It is a harder recovery than ablation though.

Pain is normal but an infection is not.

It sounds like you were not treated for your infection soon enough and so it got severe. The doctor probably means that you are experiencing more pain than would be expected from a vag. hysterectomy because of the infection. It is like the pain is helping to diagnose the infection.

I hope that makes sense.

Re: post-op infection/pain

Hi, I am 12 days post-op and doing well thank goodness. My doctor told me this is Major surgery with many complications that can arise. He told me all the complications that may arise and said 8 weeks recovery period, I too had a vaginal with cervix and uterus removed. It is Major surgery were his words, Major not minor.

Re: post-op infection/pain

The Dr & nurses said that the VTH and A&P repair (bladder prolapse and rectocele) are major surgery. The although I do not have a visible abdominal incision there are just as many stitches in my body and that the recovery was slow.

It feels like I had a vaginal delivery with episiotomy and a ceasarian at the same time as losing a body part.

They have given me ranges of restrictions for 3 weeks, 6 weeks , 3 months up to one year.

I'm so sorry to hear of your infection. I did not a vaginal, I had daVinci. I too ended up with an infection and a hematoma. Had to be in the hospital for 2 days. Depressing as hell, I'm sad for you and am thinking of you.

Re: post-op infection/pain

I feel your pain....hope you are feeling better. I am going on 7 weeks since vaginal assisted. My uterus was much larger than dr expected therefore I had severe internal tearing. I am really concerned. Still having pain and as of one week ago dr says not healed. Has anyone else had a similar situation? I really feel as though I should have had the abdominal surgery the more I read. Dr says never had anyone tear as badly as I did...THANKS!
