Re: Nausea 8 days post hysterectomy

Are you taking narcotics? They can cause nausea and also contribute to constipation which can cause nausea. Be careful to eat something(even if it's just crackers) before taking any pain meds, even non narcotics. If you're constipated, what works for me is water water water and walking a lot.

If you're taking an NSAID like ibuprofen or naproxen, those can irritate your stomach, so I second the first poster's recommendation to take it with food. If your pain medications are constipating you, peppermint tea or any other hot beverage works well - my father recently ended a bout of constipation with a cup of hot coffee. Also try supplementing your diet with magnesium, which promotes proper bowel function; food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. Ginger is a well-known remedy for stomach issues like nausea; you can cook with it, or try some crystallized ginger, ginger tea, or flat ginger ale - the fizz can bother your stomach. Also, until things return to normal, avoid hard to digest foods, including legumes, onions and garlic, cruciferous vegetables, cucumbers, melons, pears, and artificial sweeteners, as well as common stomach irritants, including tomatoes, hot peppers, citrus fruits and vinegar. Here's hoping you'll be over this soon, and back on the road to recovery!
