When did you begin "walking"?

When did you guys start taking short daily walks? I've been fortunate, I'm 11 days post op from an LAVH and the only time I feel any twinges is when I cough, sneeze, or laugh. I'd love to get OUT of my house (which I love, but I'm tired of being inside).

My doctor said, "increase walking as tolerated", whatever that means!!!

Any input would be appreciated.

When did you begin "walking"?

I started walking the day after surgery. In the hospital the nurse was pushing my IV while I held onto the rail & we walked. My DR said to walk everyday to prevent blood clots.
I ended up staying in the hospital for 5 days instead of 2 because I had bladder problems. But when I got home I would walk about 3 or 4 house & turn around & come back home.
Now I'm at 3 weeks & I'm walking at least a mile now. I think it's up to your body how far you can walk. I have read on here some woman are walking 5 miles at 3 weeks. I'm not ready for that. But you should be walking even if it's just a walk around your block & back.

When did you begin "walking"?

I had my surgery as a LAVH too.

At less than 2 weeks post-op you are still early in your recovery. The initial recovery period is 6-8 weeks. Although the external incisions are smaller with a LAVH your body has still had plenty of internal work done. The stitches typically begin to dissolve at 2-4 weeks post-op.

Some walking after surgery is good - it helps prevent blood clots. The "rules" given to me regarding walking post-op: I was told to walk 5 minutes every hour for the first week, 10 minutes every few hours for the second week, and 10-15 minutes a few times a day up to week 6. From weeks 4-6 I was allowed to use my treadmill but only at about 2.0 mph - no incline. I was told to keep the pace slow. In my opinion

I was cleared to resume all activities, including exercise after my 6 week exam. I gradually and slowly resumed my normal routine. Bodies heal differently - some take longer than others. Once your doctor clears you I suggest starting out slowly. By 3 months post-op I was up to my normal routine.

Before you begin walking again check with your doctor - sometimes doctors have different recommendations about resuming activities. If your doctor agrees I think you could take a short walk down the block.

When did you begin "walking"?

Well i had a rather nasty abdomial TAH and started walking about 8 days post op. Only around the block one time though. I agree just listen to what you body says and dont push it if you get tired. Not everyone is going to be walking miles, walking is good though.

When did you begin "walking"?

I too started walking the day after my surgery. Once I got home I went for 3 very short walks a day. i.e. 5 min. Each day I would try and increase that slightly. I am now 8 weeks post op, am back at work and still continuing my walking. I get up early AM and get in a half hour walk before I go to work. I took the opportunity while I was off to start creating some healthier life style habits. On the weekend I try to go for a longer walk.

You have to listen to your body. Try a 5 min walk. If you're ok with that then try another one later in the day. See how you do. Gradually increase it. But note the word gradually. And LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!! That is most important of all. Your body will tell you when you have overdone it.

Once I was able to take a longer walk I cut it down to 2 a day but each was longer. When it was coming up to return to work time then down to 1 a day. I knew that would normally be all I would have time for once I was back full time. I aim for 1/2 hour each day and if I get more than that's even better.

Good luck.
