Surgery Tomorrow & I Have a Cold!

I spoke with my doctor's office about an hour ago and explained to them that I have come down with a cold. They said they thought they could do the surgery tomorrow morning, as planned, so I guess we're sticking to the schedule.

On the one hand, I dread dealing with recovery from surgery at the same time I have the stuffy nose, coughing and very sore throat of my cold. Coughing and blowing my nose definitely isn't going to feel good after abdominal surgery! And I'm sure my throat will feel even worse after being intubated for a couple hours or more. Also, I just generally feel yucky right now, due to the cold and the fact that I also started bleeding really hard over the weekend. The doctor gave me something to take for the bleeding, which seems to be helping, and I'm supposed to keep using my asthma inhalers iwth the cold. All in all, I feel pretty miserable; but at least I won't be able to put up much of a fight tomorrow when it's time to leave for the hospital--LOL. I am glad to say I'm the first surgery scheduled that morning, so I won't have to wait through half the day for the surgery.

I guess it's still possible that the surgery could be canceled at the last minute. The doctor said that the anesthesiologist would check me over really thoroughly before I go in for surgery, so I guess he could call the whole thing off at the last minute. I hope not, unless I'm truly miserable in the morning.

Surgery Tomorrow & I Have a Cold!

Philippa,

I am sorry you have a cold especially right before surgery. It should be okay to have surgery, be sure there is no fever. If you have a fever or infection they would probably postpone it.

I hope you feel better, I know colds can make you feel bad, but hopefully it will only last a very short time.

Take care and best wishes on your surgery and recovery.

Surgery Tomorrow & I Have a Cold!

I don't think it would be postponed for a cold but if you had a fever to go along with it then yes it would probably be cancelled. I had a hernia surgery cancelled when I got to check in because I had a fever. Well maybe all the pain meds you will be on after surgery will help you with your cold symptoms!
