question about TVH and cervix

Hi Amanda Lynn That's a great question. Typically the way a vaginal hysterectomy is done, the cervix is destroyed in the process, so it is removed as part of the surgery. However, there is a technique for performing a vaginal hysterectomy and keeping the cervix. As far as I know, there are only a handful of DRs in the world who can perform the technique - a couple in Thailand, and I believe one in the New York area. So, for all intents and purposes, if you have a vaginal hyst, you will lose your cervix.

If someone is intent on keeping their cervix and their DR feels it's a good option for them, they could consider either an SAH (subtotal abdominal hysterectomy) or an LSH (laparascopic supracervical hysterectomy).

I hope this helps.
s,

question about TVH and cervix

I was just at my gyno's office yesterday to discuss what type of hysterectomy I should have. He decided on a vaginal hysterectomy. I ask about keeping my ovaries and cervix. He said at my age (25) and no real reason to remove them, I would keep my ovaries. He said he can leave my cervix if I really wanted but that sex would probably be better for me if it were removed. I am a rather petite woman and occasionally sex is painful from hitting my cervix. But anywho... he said he can do the VH and leave my cervix if I really wanted. So, it is an option my doctor gave me.
