Mirena or Novasure - the eternal question!

I. Am a 44 yr old with no children (never wanted them). The last few years my cycles have been getting progressively worse. In early 2013 I had a myomectmy to remove a LOT of polyps. Things seemed better but then last fall - WHAM! The floodgates have opened again bringing along with them their buddies the cramps.

We did a vaginal ultrasound in February - no polyps but a couple of fibroids. They put me on tranexamic acid - again helped for a few months but this month has sucked. Heavy bleeding, clotting and painful cramp in a very specific spot on one side.

Options mentioned before were Novasure and Mirena. Both seem good at first glance but then I read the horror stories....

Leaning towards the Mirena as it is the easiest procedurally and my insurance will cover it. Worried about the weight gain and mental side effects though. I have migraines and am on antidepressants as well.

Any advice is welcome!

Re: Mirena or Novasure - the eternal question!

I did the Mierna had it a little over a year FOR ME it wasn't a huge success but it sorta helped with the heavy periods I still got mine but it never was the same sometimes spotting others like normal heavy horrible kind. I also had discomfort often. Then in Nov 2014 it decided to come out on it's own. HORRIBLE pain horrible BUT thats me my sister in law has been getting her's for over 5 years, shes actually on her 2nd one & she has NO problems.

I was recommended NovaSure in Dec but after much research & thought I have decided to do a partial partial laparoscopic hysterectomy (uterus & tubes) as of yesterday. I suffer from those heavy periods the bleeding the pain so much so that I've needed blood transfusions over the last 4 years. I just need something more final.

I hope it works for you I truly believe in doing the less invasive things first many hugs & prayers <3

Re: Mirena or Novasure - the eternal question!

I had the Mirena put in after progesterone only BC failed to control my mennorhagia. Mine did not stay put. I ended up seeing a different physician (fibroid specialist after I developed larger, symptomatic fibroids about 6 months after getting the Mirena) who said my uterus was actually too enlarged to have even had the Mirena. I guess they like to swim around in enlarged uteri LOL!). I was also diagnosed with adenomyosis from the MRI that identified the fibroids.

But this physician and I decided to just leave things as they were as it was helping with the heavy bleeding. Not totally getting rid of it but at least decreasing it somewhat.

However, after a not so successful UFE a year and a half ago and increasing symptoms (both bulk and chronic bleeding and pelvic pain) I just had a hysterectomy last Thursday. I could have tried a repeat UFE but am glad I went the surgery route after learning that I also had uterus/bowel adhesions that were most definitely contributing to a lot of my symptoms. But I'm not sorry that I tried the conservative route first. Good luck!

Re: Mirena or Novasure - the eternal question!

Although you're considering one or the other, I thought I'd share my experience with both. Previously, I had a mirena for five years and I was really happy with it. Period was more like minimal spotting monthly and no noticeable side effects. Moving past that a few years, I ended up with crazy cycles and a diagnosis of fibroids. Now I'm five weeks post myomectomy and ablation. I also decided to go back to mirena for bc and to hopefully stop any future fibroids. My recovery has been uneventful and it's still early but I am happy with my decision.

Best wishes.

Mirena or Novasure - the eternal question!

I also had a myomectomy for fibroids. A more a was recommended for heavy bleeding and birth control afterwards. It did help some of the heavy bleeding. my body rejected the mirena after 2 years. I had a huge ovarian cyst, called a chocolate cyst from endometriosis. I chose to have a hysterectomy at this point and the cyst was removed and kept my ovaries. I am only 36. I have since read reports that mirena users report higher numbers of ovarian cysts. It has been 18 months since my hysterectomy and my quality of life has improved so much. Good luck with your journey.
