Ovulation pain and menstrual "cramping" after hysterectomy

Hi everyone!

I'm now almost three months post-hysterectomy. I kept my ovaries and should be cycling normally. I didn't keep my cervix though, so I don't know exactly when my period would be.

I've noticed a strong but dull kind of pain just above my hip bone. It can be on the left or right, and recurs with just about the same frequency as my period used to (every 20 days or so - I am a fast cycler!) The pain lasts about a day.

So I wonder if this is the pain of ovulation? Or perhaps the new equivalent of pain from cramps? My ovaries must still be sending out the hormone to begin uterine cramps, but perhaps I'm noticing the response in different tissues, now that the overwhelming pain of uterine cramps is gone?

What are your experiences, do you feel cramping or ovulation pain after your hysterectomy?

Re: Ovulation pain and menstrual "cramping" after hysterectomy

Hi, I have had similar wpain to what your describing I am 9 months post op but for the last 3 months have been getting regular pain at period time.. I know this because my friend and I were in sync regarding periods although mind would last 3 times longer :/ .. But since I have been getting these pains I have been checking in and keeping a log. I have booked back in with my gyno but I need to get a referral so I will ask my gp to order a ultrasound befor my gyno app.

I don't know what this pain is but I hope you get answers to... I know I don't want or need anymore so I will assume all you ladies feel the same way ... Hoping for good results good luck and I hope u find your answers to xx

Re: Ovulation pain and menstrual "cramping" after hysterectomy

I thought it was all in my head, but i'm now 10 weeks post op vaginal hysterectomy and have both my ovaries. My breasts are tender, have some cramps with lower back pain and hubby said my moods stink.
I guess I was naive thinking that it was all going to go away. But now I'm thinking I used to have polycystic ovaries, so i'm thinking maybe this PMS wont be every month and more like every couple of months, until the hysterectomy is changing my body.

Yes that's just your body getting used to the normal now I went through that well not the lower back pains but the breast tenderness yes I started to lactate.. I still get moody pms although it's not so bad now.. Just remember that it takes time for recovery and for your hormones to settle down.. It's only been 10 weeks for you just take some more time in adjusting it will sort it out... the body is an amazing organ most of the time lol ... It will recover

Re: Ovulation pain and menstrual "cramping" after hysterectomy

The pain you are experiencing sounds like ovulation. Each month, one or the other ovary should still release a mature egg which can be painful for some women.

The hormone that led to cramps before a hysterectomy was likely prostaglandin, and it occurred within the uterus. The ovaries don't send out a hormone that causes other tissues to cramp, though the bowels can be affected by hormonal changes during a cycle. Some women do find they continue to have those types of cramps as part of their cycle after a hysterectomy.

PMS can also continue to occur since many symptoms are related to change in hormones produced by your ovaries. For instance, you may still have bloating, breast tenderness, cravings, acne, and mood swings. Here is an article which shares a bit more: PMS after Hysterectomy.

If you ever have concerns, don't hesitate to check with your doctor!
