BM info, advice, etc...please

I have read many different posts here regarding this issue. The day before my surgery I had to take a fleet phosphore soda drink. It cleaned me out completely. The morning after my surgery after they took the catheter out I went potty in the toilet and had a blow out of gas and diarhea. Sorry to be so graphic. I have not had a BM since. I have been drinking tons of water and took 2 Colace stool softeners yesterday and 2 today. All I have cramping.
Can anyone shed any light on when these things will take effect? Should I be taking something else in conjuction with them? Am I just asking prematurely? I just got home yesterday and the surgery was the day before that.
Aside from the constant bladder pain the feeling that I am constipated is sooo painful.
Thank you.

Smiles,
Leanne

welcome home, you are still early (very early) and i understand the bowell pain, i also did the blow outs that you talked about LOL. and then i went two days with out going. I was on colace as well, still am. i'm guessing you probably don't have much in there to get out since you cleaned your system out pre-op, and i'm sure you aren't eating much. i know the its painful but it will get better, i've read on here that some of these ladies went 5 days or more with out going. best wishes and good luck. i hope i was a little helpful

Hi Leanne, hang in there. Keep taking the stool softener and the drinking of lots of water. Your symptoms sound very normal as you have only just been operated on. I only take one tablet at night and one in the morning to reduce the cramping. I was considering taking one during the day, but now things are moving and I don't have to really. I hate the cramping feeling and it's so painful. One day at a time and what ever you do, the ladies will agree with me, don't strain when going !

Hi Leanne,
I don't believe I'm going to say this, but "Prune juice is my friend." I don't know what I would have done without it to get things moving. A word of caution... moderation.
Hugs,
Robin

Hi ~ Sorry to hear that you are in some pain. I wouldn't worry too much about not having a bm yet. I can remember it alway took me at least 3-5 days after coming home from surgery. I know that I would go a little at the hospital from the supository they gave me. I think it just takes a few days for everything to start functioning 100% again.

Try Peri colace, it is a mild laxative as well as softener. It worked great!!!! I am 3 weeks post op now and going regularly with no meds. (and I had a rectocele repair.) Just drink tons of water. Hugs raymo

I've never done well with laxatives my whole life but tried Milk of Magnesia for the first time a few days after my surgery. I felt things should be moving along and was scared of becoming constipated. It worked great with hardly any cramping (hint: get the flavored kind; the original tastes nasty). Also remember, what goes in in must come out and chicken soup and yogurt are much more digestible than a T-bone. Good luck!

Things are much, much better for me in this department. But I still look at something and go, "Hmm...that looks good but I will have to poop it out later!" I still have to stay away from anything white (breads, pie crust, etc) unless I drink a ton of water and make sure I eat a salad or bran too. It stinks but then again I am eating healthier than I have ever in my life!
I know your pain. I was soooo there. I typed a thread about this right after my surgery and I was bawling when I wrote it. I thought I'd never poop good again. And it took me 3 days after my surgery to even go. But I wasn't eating really and that's probably why. Just remember "this too shall pass"
It will get better soon!
