4 cm complex cyst on L ovary and 6 cm complex pelvic mass
Last Friday (7 days post LAVH/RSO) I woke up with severe pain on my left side near my ovary. I took a percoset and ibuprofen and waited to see if it would work. 4 hours later I called my doc since obviously the med didn't work. By the time the nurse called me back it was 3 pm. They told me that if the pain was bad enough to go to the ER. By Sunday I couldn't deal with it anymore and agreed to go to the ER.
So glad I did! For starters, they gave me 1mg dilaudid to help with the pain. They did a CT scan and found a 4 cm complex cyst on my left ovary (only ovary left, figures) and a 6 cm complex pelvic mass.
My doc isn't sure if it's a hematoma or abscess and started me on strong abx just in case. (even though I wasn't running a fever or feeling flu-ish) If the abx don't work or it's a hematoma and doesn't resolve itself I either have to have a CT assisted drainage or another laparoscopy for them to do it.
Anyone else go through anything like this and not have to have any intervention?
I was doing soooo awesome, too, last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Hardly any pain at all. Then whammo! Oh, and on top of all this, I started spotting/lightly bleeding last night and still today. I was assuming it was my sutures dissolving and my doc seems to think that's what it most likely is from also. I go for another appt Thursday morning just to make sure things are ok. They want to give the abx time to work.
I'm sure one day this will all be just a distant memory...

Re: 4 cm complex cyst on L ovary and 6 cm complex pelvic mass
Hi Mrs. Beachbum -- Wow, what a roller coaster. If I am right in my (sometimes foggy) memory, you wrote last week expressing your struggle about whether to go to the ER. How fortunate that you followed your instincts! And I hope that the antibiotic treatment works.
I am curious about these masses & how do/did they come about? Were these missed by your LAVH surgeon or did they spring up after surgery? Will they be sent to pathology testing?
What a scare. I too hope that this is one day (soon) a distant memory with a positive outcome.

Hi Zoemsf! Yes, that was me talking about going to the ER and whether or not I should go since all I had was just pain, no bleeding or fever. I didn't exactly follow my instincts as my DH was about to drive me up there whether or not I wanted to go. lol I just decided to cooperate. lol
I'm not exactly sure how this all came about, but the hematoma is possible after any surgery. And the cyst, well, not exactly new to me. lol I've always dealt with cysts, and this is the 2nd known one since February.
Neither were there before/during surgery. Just something that happened afterwards. I'm hoping the abx work, too, but I have a feeling they're not. Not sure if they send any of this to path if they have to remove it. The cyst can just be drained or popped. Unless any of it looks suspicious. Which I doubt. We'll find out more at my appt on Thursday.
How are you feeling?

Re: 4 cm complex cyst on L ovary and 6 cm complex pelvic mass
Hi -- Well, I'm glad your DH had good instincts then! Sometimes it's hard to have perspective when you're engulfed in pain. Wow, that's daunting that you have these cysts that develop easily--sounds very painful. I had an ovarian cyst when I was 23 y.o. (I'm now 61) that required surgery to remove & I recall it being rather excruciating.
Try to be patient with the antibiotics; they can take awhile to work. On the other hand, did the doctor tell you a time frame for pain relief & what they would do if the antibiotics don't work & you don't get the relief?
I am 8 days post-op LAVH & doing very well with my recovery, though still having abdominal soreness, swollen belly, & fatigue -- all to be expected, so I've heard. I have a chronic back pain condition though that took a walloping with this surgery & it's been hard to relieve that, though I'm making strides. Counting the days until I hear the final pathology report, trying to be patient, & looking forward to having this all behind me in the rear-view mirror!
Best wishes.

Re: 4 cm complex cyst on L ovary and 6 cm complex pelvic mass
I wonder if I am dealing with the same thing. I was 4 weeks post-op on 6/19 and have been feeling fine. Last night I started having a sharp pain on my left side where I believe my left ovary is. I couldn't lay on my left side, but made it through the night. I still have the pain today no change in the severity of it and it hurts when I stand up and then sit down. I've got another post-op appt. in 3 days, just hoping I can make it that long. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it could be. If you're not sure if you can wait it out, give your doc a call and see what they say. I'm sorry you're having pain. Hope they can figure it out.
I went again yesterday for a follow-up from Monday. They did an u/s and found that the cyst has grown .5 cm since Sunday. I have my 2 week post op next Wednesday and they'll be doing another u/s to check it again. They're looking at putting me on meds to get it under control. This is my only ovary, and I really don't want to lose it.
Hope you feel better soon!
