Abnormal Thyroid Caused By Anemia?

I was diagonsed last summer with an abnormal thyroid & put on meds. The blood work was drawn at the same time they discovered I was severely anemic. (5.2) I wondered at the time if the anemia had triggered my thyroid to be abnormal... I have read that it causes all your organs to be sluggish. My theory on the whole thing was that anemia slowed down my thyroid & my abnormal thyroid caused me to be more anemic. I plan to be retested this summer now that my hyst is over & all my blood is back.

Has anyone else developed a thyroid condition while they were anemic & if so, was there a change after your blood was rebuilt?

Abnormal Thyroid Caused By Anemia?

Hi,

Sorry you are experiencing this. I did not have this problem, but until someone comes along who might have, you can do a Search at the top of the page and put in thyroid , anemia to pull up threads that may help you find some answers .

I hope you are back to good health very soon.

No, I didn't have this. I do have hypothyroidism though, and never was anemic until my surgery (bleeding during surgery).
Does any of your family have some sort of thyroid problems? It does run in families.

Thanks.... no, there is no family history of thyroid problems, that's what makes me wonder. I know it can happen at any time, but I have had mine checked in the past & it was fine. I know my heart was effected when I was anemic... heart palpitations, shortness of breath, swelling in my feet & ankles & pulse in my ears, so I thought maybe it effected my thyroid as well. I guess all I can do is to have it rechecked & see if anything has changed.

Just about all the symptoms you mentioned having can be associated with hypothyroidism! You might have actually had this longer than you think....and just thought it was all from the anemia.

In my case all those symptoms were caused by the anemia... they ALL disappeared as soon as I had my transfusions & that was a month before I started my thyroid meds. I was missing about 2/3s of my blood & didn't have enough for my heart to pump.
