Please help! Very vaque discharge instructions and restrictions

I had a TAH 8/9 and was released less than 24 hours later, this seemed odd to me but government health care (I am Indian) also rushes people so I didn't question much... Anyhow my ONLY discharge directions were to take pain meds, have a normal diet, and return to activity as tolerated.

So here I am 9 days post op feeling absolutely horrible, and I am not sure what to do. I have been doing my best to take it easy and rest, but my pain is still out of control, I have little to no appepitite, have been nauseous, having stabbing pelvic pains (like electric shocks)

Ive had 4 c-sections previously and have put myself on the same restrictions but I thought I would have turned a corner by now, but instead of feeling better, I seem to be feeling worse. Someone please help me!

I need advice or can someone tell me what their Drs told them. My dr left on vacation the day after my surgery and the nurses in the hospital are no help

Re: Please help! Very vaque discharge instructions and restrictions

Bless your heart!! I was released about 24hrs after my surgery too. I wanted to be though so I was happy. I felt like you did in the beginning. I really didn't have a lot of discharge instructions. Most what I got from doc before hand and rest I learned from here. Biggest thing is to realize this is a major surgery. Listen to your body. Once I followed that advice which is repeated over and over again on this site, I started to feel better. My dr went on vac day after my surg too, but he had a resident who took over for him while gone. She's been wonderful too. Hang in there.

Re: Please help! Very vaque discharge instructions and restrictions

My discharge instructions were to take a list of my meds to my next appointment.

Basically what my doc told me was no lifting, no baths, no driving, walk some and REST for 6 weeks. I laid down, sat down, and walked.

My pain meds didn't help my constant nagging pain so I stopped taking it a few days of being home. However, many need it for longer than they have pills and refills are very hard to get. Call your doctor's office or go into a walk- in clinic or ER to see if you can get pain meds.

I did not take on any responsibilities. I took short walks every so often, sat on the couch a lot and laid down when worn out. I drove at 5 weeks. It was very boring! I got frustrated at week three since I didn't feel I was improving enough to return to work in three more weeks. I had good days followed by bad days. When I did go back to work, I found the office chair excruciatingly hard to adjust to. I ended up turning my station into a stand up station and would sit once in awhile to get used to sitting.

Everyone is different in how they heal because of different procedures, what needed to be done, and health going into the surgery. It sounds like you never had the chance to get a handle on your pain? That is your goal right now, do whatever you need to to get someone to put you on pain meds. Call the surgeon's office and if that doesn't work call you regular doctor and if that doesn't work go to walk- in or ER. Even if s doc is on vacation, there is a substitute. If that person says no, call back when your doc does return.

Now is the time to focus on yourself. Do not overdo. You may feel capable, but you will pay for it that night or next day.

Scroll through this site or use the search engine to find others who have had similar issues. They will have found answers that I don't have.

Take care!

Ps. Eat as healthy as you can and drink water. Fruit and veggies are great! I think good food will help in the healing process.

Re: Please help! Very vaque discharge instructions and restrictions

The first 2-4 weeks can be rough. Try to rest for a few more days, but if the pain gets worse instead of better, try to reach a doctor. The no appetite and nausea could be signs of an infection or some other problem.

Re: Please help! Very vaque discharge instructions and restrictions

I too was given very vague instructions. I rested as much as I could, I took Stool Softeners with pain meds, I avoided sitting in a bath tub and like many others followed more so the advice on here. It may take longer then you have given yourself. Don't "should" yourself. Every woman is different in her recovery. Sometimes every day or every hour is different.

Re: Please help! Very vaque discharge instructions and restrictions

Hello. Its suprising how much the discharge instructions differ from place to place and country to country. Last year after repairs I was told take Docusate and pain meds, no codeine, can be constipating, drink plenty of water. Two showers or baths a day, plain water, no soap, gel, lotions, no vacuuming for 6 weeks, no sex and no lifting anything heavier than a litre of water. I found everything was exhausting until about week 4, but still tried to do some activity each day, even just walking about my garden and up and down drive a few times. Take things slowly, hope you are feeling better soon.
