Coffee
I was offered tea at first in the castle but I quickly requested coffee (in fact it was Starbuck Coffee). I got sick the next morning after sugery but I found out it was from too much morphine (PCA Pump & Morphine Drip). The nurses quickly gave me something for the nausea in my IV and cut way back on the Morphine. I thought the coffee got me sick but it wasn't. I was put on a regular diet and received coffee with every meal! It was wonderful!

Why Can't I.....?
Your DR may not tell you not to drink soda, but we do here... from experience. Soda (or beer, if you're allowed to have it, anything carbonated) is the quickest way to some really bad gas , which you do NOT want post op!
Similarly, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts are all a bad idea.
You heard it here first!

Why Can't I.....?
I know the official HS advice is no carbonation, but...I never had any trouble with gas, either in the hosp or when I got home. When they offered me ginger ale in the hosp I was surprised, and when each glass was served cold and with a straw I was even more surprised. 3 things that are supposed to be no no's if I wanted to avoid gas - a straw, cold beverage, and carbonation. I'm not recommending chugging a cold soda immediately after surgery. But if you customarily drink sodas, start slow and with just a little bit, to see if it's going to bother you.
After I was home I didn't drink as much diet pepsi as usual, I tried to drink lots of water or juice instead. It's so much better for you than the soda.
I think I was served herbal tea with every meal while I was in the hosp, including the time I was on a liquid diet. I don't drink it, so I didn't, and all I can remember is there was a tea bag and a cup of hot water.
If your DR told you not to drink coffee, ask why, and then be sure to follow his/her instructions. If coffee is OK with your DR, drink it, but as with everything, in moderation.
Best wishes!

No coffee
I am a RN and RM and deal with post c/s ladies all of the time. Post surgical people are put on clear fluids until they pass wind to show that their bowel is working. As the bowel is moved up out of the way in a hysterectomy, it may go into paralysis and may not work for a while, so they only let you have easily digestible things. eg. clear broth, jelly and herb tea.
If the caffeine is the issue, one can always have De-caf coffee! I am a coffee addict, but, because of bladder problems and palpitations, have totally come off caffeine. I still have loads of cups of coffee per day, but without the side effects eg. incontinence (sometimes) and the jitters.
If it is for the bowel and you really need to have your coffee, just ask if you can have it without milk. When they said that you couldn't have coffee, did they say only initially or for a while?
Good luck. I am having mine on the 10/10/02 and have loads of worries and concerns also. It is great to read what others ahve to say.
Lea.

Without my Coffee
Wow!
I am still really impressed with the amount of help and comment you can get on any subject around here. It's really ! The
said some things can be negotiated back into your diet if they are regular--also they didn't know I don't add anything into my coffee.
But now I have a new question. My dog (Gerberian Shepsky model) follows me everywhere and gets really excited sometimes. Leaving him outside is not an option. Is the pillow going to be enough protection after a few days or what do I need to do? As usual, all help is welcome.

Why Can't I.....?
I brought a 4-pack of bottled Starbucks Frapaccinos to the castle with me, just in case their coffee was awful. Nevermind pain from surgery - I didn't want a caffeine-withdrawal headache. For me, they feel like getting cracked across the back of the head with a 2x4. Turns out they gave me coffee, and it was fine.
There was sister here a few weeks ago (didn't catch her name...) who expressed her concern about caffeine-withdrawal headaches, and her doctor ordered caffeine added to her *IV*. What the heck, you can alway ask...

Why Can't I.....?
I was offered only decaf tea while still hooked to my morphine IV. Once off that I was given coffee with each meal. But, like some other princesses, I did not have a large appetite for it. Felt better to stick to water. Have had some soda & coffee since arriving back home, but not as much as I used to. Still trying to drink as much water as possible to get well.
I have a Cairn Terrier who seems to sense I do not feel well. He has cautiously tried to be up with me on the sofa & I encourage him to stay away from my ab, but to rest with me. He keeps bringing me toys & trying to cheer me up! He is so loving & hasn't been a problem as far as jumping on me. Somehow they seem to know.
Best wishes for a quick recovery!
